A Chapter by Haafizah Bhamjee

Samantha could feel her body numbing and she had to sit down to stabilize her breathing . Over the past couple of weeks Sam had grown accustomed to the idea of passing out at random moments. Her doctor, Dr Pearson, had shunned it off as nothing more than the affects of stress and a poor diet plan, but that didn't change the fact that it was treacherously nauseating to constantly fear the faint sting of darkness. Especially when it always seemed to happen at the most inconvenient moments, like this one.
"Sam. Saaam. Are you okay." A small voice edged its ways through her thoughts.
"Yea, yea I'm fine." She said. Quickly standing up, to avoid eye contact with the other person.
"Are you sure?"
"I'm fine Emily. Go find mom in the audience she must be looking for you." She tried to change the subject.
"Are you sure you've got this?" Emily was being persistent and Samantha was forced to look down at her little sister. The little blue eyes stared back at her wide with worry.
"Em." Sam bent to peer the girl in the eyes. "Have i ever lied to you." She watched as a smile grew on the little girls chubby face.
" Now go take your seat or you'll miss my performance. I'm up next." She faked a frail smile at the girl. And watched as the tiny figure hoped away.
She took a deep, unsteady breath. Taking in all the silence she could get. Suddenly there was an arm on her shoulder.
"Its time Sam." A voice said. She opened her eyes and slowly walked until she was standing directly in the middle of the large stage. Everything was dark, still, quite, the earth was moving a little and it felt funny, but she didn't let that stop her.
"Keep it together Sam. This is important." She tried to convince herself.
Then suddenly the curtains were being raised. Bright, blinding light filled the emptiness of the stage. Soft music started playing.
"One, two, three,four.." She started counting. "..five, six, seven."
Sam could hear the sound of clapping, as she glided across the large dark stage, she couldn't see anyone but she knew they were there. Mom, Emily, even Christina had flown down to see her performance tonight. And there was a comfort knowing that all the people she loved were right there, supporting her. And she was doing it. She was almost there. Almost done, and she had nailed every single beat.
She closed her eyes and turned her head to the sealing.
" And turn, and turn."
Suddenly it became too much, the ground beneath her was shaking more heavily now. Moving around twisting and turning, the room was in strange angles, the sounds too loud until the feeling consumed her.
And then Darkness
