Valor

Valor

A Poem by Holly Mason

Enemies approaching
man down
leaving safeties nest
on a steep ridge
deeply entrenched
fearlessly redirects
small arms and mortar
man down
is retrieved
first aid given
by squad leader
bravely leads
squad to
executed maneuver
overrun enemy positions
changing battle outcome
valor brilliantly shines
SILVER STAR-awarded to my Poppy
squad leader of company G
third battalion
First Marines
action-March 11,1951 Korean war

Hall of fame tribute…Holly
So brave and courageous were ALL those men and women…and ALL those who followed.
Isn't it tragic we even have to honor the many fallen heroes and heroines from ALL the wars we've endured. So many lives taken and affected...
Thank you for sharing your memories Holly…and if Dad is still living…please thank him for me.
Well done on this Memorial Day,
allen

The repetition of the phrase 'man down' is so well employed and creates the fog of war in this write. I can't imagine for one second how scared they must be during such combat situations.
This is a fine tribute Holly. Truly your pride shines through.

5th grade science class,
Small twelve or fourteen kids,
Big tall teacher, strides back and fourth
Teaching looking into each of us ,
only boys,
Snap!
Down he goes hits the floor
Wills himself up, slams a prosthetic on the table,
"This boys is a gift from the Korean war",
we never knew, the war, the leg, the mark , the day , the man is part of me,forever.
He shod horses,
Hands quick he would stop the pucks.
Your poem ,a salute to the men of war.

march eleven, Korean War,
A general slow drive,
Soldiers, men line the side of the road,
Spaced , measure the man, The general,
His force, salute stare ,
each one settling in the dust as he past,
Heart and mind knew The man The General,
Had looked right at him,
MacArthur.
“mentally unprepared for war.” Not his men.

Very nice - I can see this brave soldier earning that Silver Star. Appropriate for Memorial Day - and our gratitude is appropriate every day. Great write, Holly!

The brave military men and women are a special breed. Just a follow up to a great piece of recognition.
