New Patterns

New Patterns

A Poem by Holly Mason

scary new gadgets,
as seen through an elders eyes...
Set in ways
of what was taught
You have bought them a new phone
see it through their eyes
a scary device that will make them appear dumb
how does it work
they ask you
you answer as if they are a child
frustrating for them don't you think
so many buttons that light up
their parents were scared to
they sit and look at you
"I don't need fancy gadgets,
all you kids now a days
always so pushy and busy."
"New stuff everyday,
I don't live like that."
they are actually saying
I am aging this will be hard to grasp
I cannot look stupid it scares me
"Take it back I do not want it."
they are actually saying
I do not want you to teach me
I am your teacher and have been always
they are not angry, just scared
let the new gadget lay on the counter
do not answer with harshness
they will figure it out
they will not realize when they show you
how it works that they are looking for your approval
as you did for years
new patterns are scary
new ways to teach the old days

all ages sir all ages
thank you so
We always mock what we do not understand... I have come to that point where I am not understanding some of the things the youth do... damn am I getting old. Not with technology though... I love it and used properly will actually help us learn quicker, the down side is it makes us lazier.

Oh Holly, I so get this. My Mum, who has dementia, was like this when she got her kindle. Totally bewildered, but for some reason, after she got over the fear of pressing the wrong button would break it, her love for reading won the day and she surprised us all. Now she shows me how to do this and that with it.
She is the teacher....I love your take on this. So true. And we do treat them like kids sometimes. The experience of a life lived, is worth far more than what they young uns think they know.
