Mugshot Mom

Mugshot Mom

A Poem by Holly Mason

The gavel is up
so is time
drunk driving again
what a mess I find
old and ugly
scary looking to
this is what I find
when I finally
search for you
put in the name
the search is far and wide
I find the right name
under the mugshot site
sad but true
I read them all
this is you
I feel two feet tall
for below your face
was a curse
I will keep looking
which is worse
if that one was not you
I wish it so was not
for below the real you
was another empty mugshot
twice in two months
dwi
I do not really know you
and I will never try
how many mugshots does it take to make a mom
27 in total in the land I come from

Great work and I'm sure it struck a chord in many people. Of all the drugs I did in my youth alcohol was one of the most dangerous.
I've read some of your other work. You have a great knack for this.

Not the kind of memories to be proud of. It's your life and your memories you have made that are important

this is really sad, Holly...

hard things we find out sometimes about those close to us...and it really creates a distance we can't seem to minimalize.

Alcoholism is, a very nasty disease, which has ravage my family. Having witnessed first-hand, the damage it dones, to a person and the family. My brother was lucky, if you can call it, lucky, but he never got pulled over for a DWI. Beyond totalling, my dad's truck, at the time. Or his two year disappearance, around the time of my dad's death, in 1998.

Hoping by writing and sharing this, Holly, you have release some of your pain and anger.
