The Science of Us

The Science of Us

A Poem by Travis Gibson (poetic heroics)
"

When objects attract.

"
traveling through this universe
along paths completely our own
entrenched by the lure of lightspeed,
finding stillness to be wanting
each of us...
barely breathing, barely caring

drunk on the momentum of youth
and testing divine classification
we were gods parading as angels
entertaining a human audience
with insatiable devilish intent
barely breathing, barely caring

the inevitable clash...
unstoppable/immovable cheek to cheek
each poised to be victorious
and at the precipice, we both fell
rapt in magnetic chemistry
not really breathing, not really caring

timelines shatter in unison
we push/pull at one another...
gravity and fate's inertia find their footing
and in the bewildering arms of chaos
we come to rest, in an orbit of us
finally breathing, finally caring...
finally living

Author's Note

Travis Gibson (poetic heroics)
Not sure how I feel bout this. It kinda just started itself (on a very late night)... credit to the movie: Passengers, for the inspiration.

Sorry if the metaphors are a bit murky... wanted to try to marry science, love, and poetry. I hope it all translates well.

Beautiful. I've read it twice, will have to go back and read it again to see how my brain can further decipher.

"We come to rest, in an orbit of us"
Love this

It does translate well. Travis you are good, how do you merge all the three. This is good, definitely up to shelving

I wish I could explain it, this piece truly wrote itself. I am glad you find it so affecting.
This piece was blended beautifully. The poem alone exists as a heartbeat. I almost see/hear/feel the pulsations through the screen. Sometimes when there a spark, then come flame. When two unstoppable forces come together and become one, then they've gotten it to a science of living and loving such oneness. This was breathtaking. Great read.

Thank you for such a reassuring review... I can't be any more humbled by your thoughts.
Here at the cafe, a guy named Jacob is the best at writing extended metaphors into his poetry & this poem of yours is of a similar quality for extended-metaphor-crafting. "drunk on the momentum of youth" may be one of the best lines I've ever heard to describe how I lived my own youth. I love the way you use the repeated similar lines with "breathing/caring" . . . I prefer when a poet switches it up a little bit when using a repeated line, just so the line evolves with interest . . . you've done this well. I also like when the story/characters are transformed by the journey described in the poem, another thing you do well here (((HUGS))) Fondly, Margie

Given my respect for Jacob's pen, your thoughts on this piece are considered an extreme compliment. .. read more
This reads like Star Trek meets Greek mythology and the mix seems to work as the protagonist making the journey above the clouds comes back down to earth with feeling.

Great work with a brilliant combination of science, poetry and human emotions. I really liked the lines-timelines shatter in unison

I too am a science student and have seen passengers also and so I really loved the usage of inertia and appreciate the inspiration you got from the movie because the poem is really very good :)

You're welcome and it was my pleasure to review it :)
the wedding worked i think...love.....poetry....breathing and caring...
in youth, even though we may feel strongest...we are fairly carefree...
and don't understand life so much...as we grow we reach a point where maybe our hearts and souls die....
maybe we have to die to live...or at least to appreciate what we have.
reminds me of emily dickinson's "because i could not stop for death" as kind of a wake up call...
lets not add to the chaos...let's come to rest amidst the chaos...find our peace with ourselves and others...and live.

I really enjoyed this, Travis. I particularly like the second verse. Your clever use of space travelling as a metaphor for a human relationship is intriguing, and it works well. Unfortunately I haven't seen the movie, but that did not detract from the enjoyment of this piece. Kudos, my friend.
