The Overly Amazing Catch

The Overly Amazing Catch

A Poem by Travis Gibson (poetic heroics)
"

For Gene, mourning you in celebration this year.

"
Three brothers stood, from eldest to least of age.
High noon made them antsy, hearts wanted to be uncaged.

Then from under a bush, perfectly timed, came a wandering hare;
A brief notion of want, lead to a grand brotherly dare.

Challenge accepted, the eldest took ready hands out of his pockets.
They locked eyes, he took a step and BOOM! they were off like rockets!

They zigged and zagged between tombstones, blurring as they moved.
The hare had blinding speed and a man on his tail with something to prove.

Now two brothers stood, the youngest with high hopes, the other simply amazed.
If the eldest catches the hare, the memory would last the rest of their days.

A caught hare punctuated an exceptional victory of man,
As did the golden stream of fear that flowed from his hands.

Thanks for reading. Special thanks to, Angi for sparking the idea that lead me to write this. She asked me to try my hand at "funny." Here it is... my older bro caught a rabbit in a cemetery when I was about twelve. This was my retelling of said event.

This is a wonderful poetic retelling.
They zigged and zagged between tombstones, blurring as they moved.

I loved this one Travis... you have yet again bowled me over with your poetic prowess which flows smoothly from your skilled pen. This was truly an endearing read, you had me hooked from the mere mention of the 3 brothers.. 3 brothers of which I have and your words reminded me of each of them.

You can never break a brothers bond.... even when there gone...

A poignant and wonderful poem...

Travis, I can see the scene so vividly! What a great memory this is - who needs video when there are storytellers like you? The rhyme and rhythm add to the light mood here - Thank you for this smile tonight!

Good to know. ;)
You set out the scene very well for a short piece of poetry and build the tension and moment well with your word choice. Easy rhyming felt natural and unforced. The humour of this scene speaks for itself.

I found this piece to poignant in its take on perspective: the three brothers and the poor little frightened hare. It was really wonderful short story.
