The Little Rainbow©

High above the clouds where the rainbow‘s are, a little rainbow was looking down watching what was going on.

He turned to his mother saying, what are those things down there moving around mother?

They are called humans his mother told him, some are good ones, but there some bad ones too.

Oh, do any need our help? He asks, or don’t we do anything at all?

No my son, we spread across the sky after a bad storm and at the end, there is a pot of gold that no one has ever caught yet his mother answered, but some do make a wish on us.

On earth a little boy who was a chimney sweep looked up at the sky, he could see a storm was on its way so he ran home; his little sister was coughing again.

He had bought something from a man to help her with the cough, but didn’t tell the owner or he would have got a good beating and his sister would have suffered.

The owner was a cruel and selfish man who took children in and made them work, but also took all monies they made from their job, if any child was caught keeping any money they were put out on the streets again.

The boy’s name Kevin, he was seven years old and his sister Kathleen was six.

Their mother had gone out one day and never came back, Kevin was told about this man who took children as long as they paid him for their keep.

They waited for three weeks as they had enough food till then, but then the authorities found out they were on their own and were going to put them in a home.

Kevin took his sister with him and they went to see the man who let them stay in his big old house.

For four years Kevin worked hard but was no fool with money, he found a hiding place and put a bit of money in it for those four years he worked.

Kathleen still had a bad chest and he did his best looking after her, until one day when he came home, he found her just laying there.

He took her to the hospital and was told how much it would cost; he got the money he saved up and handed some over for the treatment for his sister.

He still had  a lot left so he left the old house and moved into an empty one he had seen every day it was a small house but big enough for him and Kathleen.

Kevin had a gift of making things so he set about making furnisher, he found more work and once again began to save up.

Kathleen was not a very strong girl but learned how to cook for them; she cleaned their little home and washed their clothes in the river nearby, then took to her bed again.

She told Kevin to let her die in peace this time as she was fed up being ill all the time.

Kevin told her there is no way he will let her die as things might change one day for them, all for the better.

The little rainbow had been watching all this and asks his mother is there a way he could do anything? He wanted to help Kevin and Kathleen.

There is nothing you can do my son, as we are just rainbows of all the colors and we do nothing at all she replied.

There must be something we can do besides spreading across the sky he said, and I will find it.

Poor Kathleen was going from bad to worst and it upset Kevin to see her suffering like this, he sat outside the little house after a bad storm ended and saw the rainbow, how I wish there was some way to find someone to help my sister he thought.

The little rainbow picked up the boys thoughts and said, I will find a way to get to you Kevin, so hold on.

A gang of older boys came and saw Kevin and his sister; they wrecked everything and picked on Kathleen.

Leave her alone Kevin cried, can’t you see my sister is ill and dying.

The boys stopped and looked at her then the leader said, I am sorry, I didn’t know.

They set about cleaning the mess up they made and told Kevin to go with them to a better house where they will be looked after.

Kevin did and his sister was taken away from him, he asks where she is?

Oh don’t worry the woman told him as she is being looked after by a doctor friend of mine.

The weeks turned into months and the months turned into years, and each time he ask about his sister, he was told she is living in a big house with the doctors wife and being well looked after.

Kevin is now seventeen years old and still found a place to hide his money, he went to a bank and talked with the manager who told him he could open a bank account with them as he was only fourteen years old then, and Kevin put a mark on the paper not knowing just how twisted the manger was.

But when he went for his money, he was told he signed everything over to the manger, this broke his heart as he was saving up to buy his own house for him and his sister Kathleen.

Oh no the little rainbow cried, how could that man do that to Kevin after him saving up all these years?

I told you my son, there are some bad ones too remember?

But mother he cried, Kevin thinks only of his sister, he never thinks about himself as he puts her first each time, and has no idea where she is.

That is the ways of the humans my son and we can do nothing about it.

But he’s forgotten about the money he has in that empty house mother, there must be a way to help him the little rainbow said.

All we can do my son, is spread across the sky, we cannot talk to them or stand in front of them his mother told him.

That gives me an idea the little rainbow thought, and off he went across the sky.

Kevin found out by accident about his sister and went mad, he thought she was being looked after by a doctor then found out she was in a workhouse, he went there and saw her.

I will find a way to you out of here he told her, so please don’t give up Kathleen.

As he was on his way back, he saw the little rainbow, where on earth did you come from he cried?

The rainbow moved and stopped over the empty house, and Kevin watched as it moved up, then back down again.

He couldn’t work out what it was doing so he went back to where he lived.

It was a few days later when he saw it again, doing the same thing, and saw it a few times after that.

Then one day when he saw it, he went to walk away but this time the rainbow surrounded him and he found he couldn’t go the way he wanted.

The little rainbow began to get angry and said, I am trying to show you something you stupid boy.

Well why didn’t you say so in the first place, and I am not stupid Kevin shouted back.

OH! You can hear me the little rainbow said.

Yes I can Kevin replied, but I don’t know how.

Oh this is great the little rainbow told him, now I can tell you what I’ve been trying to do for you.

I  didn’t know what to do to help you as I picked up on your thoughts, so I came  here hoping that each time I was over that old house, and in my own way I was pointing to where you left it the little rainbow told him.

What are you talking about? Kevin asks, what did I leave in that house?

Six years ago when you and Kathleen lived here, what did you hide each week? The little rainbow asks.

Kevin looked at him then he cried out, oh my god I forgot about the money I hid.

Wait until tonight then come back and I will help you the rainbow told him, you are being followed by one of the gang who cannot see me, all he can see is you standing here.

Ok I will come back tonight Kevin replied, but what if he follows me again?

Oh don’t worry about that as I can do something to throw him off, the rainbow answered as I will be stronger at night time.

I will go with you and guard you while you get Kathleen out of that workhouse as I can surround you so no one will see you the rainbow told him, and then it floated back up into the sky.

Kevin stood there for a while, then walked away and went back home.

That night Kevin went to the workhouse, he waited for the rainbow to come, it came to him five minutes later and surrounded him saying, walk in behind this woman who is coming over.

Kevin did as the rainbow told him, as the rainbow also told him how he had put Gary off following him.

How did you do that? Kevin asks.

I made him think he was still following you in his mind the rainbow replied, now let’s get Kathleen out of here and I will show you where to go next.

Kevin did everything the little rainbow told him, and it took them to a big house two miles down the road.

What is this place? Kevin asks.

When your mother left that day eight years ago, she fell and banged her head, when she woke up she found herself in hospital and suffered from loss of memory.

She married the doctor and her memory came back to her in time, she went back looking you both but never found you and never gave up either looking for you both, this is where she lives the rainbow told him.

Oh no, I cannot just knock on the door saying, we are your lost children Kevin said, it wouldn’t be right doing that now after these years.

Knock on the door Kevin as Kathleen needs help right now the little rainbow told him, look at her Kevin.

Kevin looked at his sister and saw how white she was, so he knocked on the door.

The woman opened the door and took them in, then after talking to Kevin and he told her everything she cried out, my son and daughter, you have come home.

The doctor took over Kathleen and after a year, she was healthy again, Kevin never saw that little rainbow again or forgot how it found a way to help them.

You did well my son in helping Kevin and Kathleen, and you are the first rainbow to find a way of doing this his mother told him.

It was you who gave me the idea in the first place mother when you said, all we can do is spread across the sky the little rainbow replied.

I am happy that I found that way to help them as they will be alright now that they have found their mother again, and Kevin is rich anyway but all his thoughts were for his sister, and I am glad it turned out right in the end for them all.

Was I dreaming Kevin that night you came back for me at the workhouse? Did I really see a little rainbow around us? Kathleen asks.

You were not dreaming Kathleen he replied, for some unknown reason  that little rainbow found a way to get to me and help me to get you away from there, and took us to our mother.

I will never forget that little rainbow as long as I live, he said and with the money I have I will get a big house for the homeless children and will call it, The Rainbow Home.

Do you know Kathleen that people say at the end of a rainbow is a pot of gold, and I found my pot of gold, IN that little rainbow.
