Unknown

Unknown

A Poem by GwenLark
"

This is for my best friend, Amanda.

"

Thank God I jumped

Thank God I took the plunge

That deep, terrifying plunge,

Precarious on the precipice,

Into the unknown

I was worthy,

I was deemed worthy.

The unknown rewarded me.

Not with gold and riches,

Not with fame and glory

Simply with happiness,

Simply with a new start,

Simply with a smile.

A smile that I thought

I never deserved.

A smile that always seemed so

Distant,

Unrealistic,

Unreachable.

This unknown,

This unique unknown

Was only unknown to me.

What was unknown to me was

Happiness.

Thank God I jumped

Thank God I took the plunge.

Not knowing what it's truly about but still knowing how personal, brave and profound this piece is to you makes it that much more of a read. It shows the merit in personality, the value in a smile, the strength of emotion and shares the spirit of happiness. Good write, thanks for sharing!

This poem was really well structured. There was something very satisfying about how the climactic "Happiness" at the end follows the group of sentences that start with 'W' (as well as the sentence right before it that ends in a 'W' word). Coming at the end of a poem with several groups of same-first-letter-sentences, the 'H' starting word strikes powerfully. It's an interesting and stylistic choice that I think both supports the emotion of the whole poem and displays the uniqueness of your own voice. I guess I'm just trying to say that this is a good poem and I really liked it. Simple, but deep and lovely.

Thanks so much for reading
So sweet, humble and vulnerable, praising a higher power for allowing happiness into your life through a friendship. Between the lines, I sense a remarkable backstory here. Beautiful language , repetition, emotion well-expressed. This reads like a prayer. Amen & God bless.
