My Demons

My Demons

A Poem by Giulia King

Why can't I let my demons go?
I'm forever married to the darkness.
I keep screaming into my pillow,
hoping that I'll disappear into thin air.
I light another cigarette,
hoping the smoke will choke me,
knowing that with every new cigarette,
I'll be closer to the darkness.
Closer to you.
We all might have something that keeps us wide awake at night,
keeps our thoughts running wild.
Words are like knives on my skin, slowly cutting me up.
I realize, not every story has a happy ending.
I can feel him waiting for me.
His eyes are on me.
Sucking me into his embrace.
I can feel him in my bloodstream.
I can't breathe.
He's here,
he's come out to play.

'My Demons'
Giulia King,
To be chained, to be addicted to something is like a demon I believe. It definitly does not make someones life better. The reference to a cigarette is one many identify. In my youth cigarette smoking was done quite a lot and now it is seen to be a health hazard. Good writing with a good message.

I like the darkness here. Love seeing something different. Something some people fear. The part that grabbed at me was "I realize, not every story has a happy ending."

Everyone has their own demon that we our self created.

Thank you! :)
Really like this. It's a topic that I struggle with A LOT since my past is rather dark, and I often feel like a shadow is permanently cast across my future because of it. It's enough to make one nihilistic or fatalistic, but from time to time, inspiration and beauty break through the clouds.

"I keep screaming into my pillow,
hoping that I'll disappear into thin air"

Words are like knives on my skin, slowly cutting me up.

Love those lines. Very poignant. The intensity cracks.

Thank you for reading
Perhaps we create our own demons because in some pathetic way, we need them. We accept the outrage and results of.. but carry on because.. we don't care, we're comfortable, we make our own choices, answering to no.one. Your writing lures the reader into stepping outside and thinking more.

Yours is a gripping poem, no excuse, no guilt, but.. compulsive.. Great visual by the way.

We all have demons we're trying to fight off. But they never seem to want to leave. Thank you, Ted!
