City Of Lights

City Of Lights

A Poem by Giulia King

. . .

It's 2 am and she's wide awake.
Staring at the moonlight,
coming in from her windowpane.
Her mind is racing and her thoughts are haunting her.
He's always in her head at night.

Outside, there's a city of lights and noise.
The flatiron building, standing tall and gracious.
She always felt like that building,
but never told anyone.
How can you feel like a building?
It's a thing, she shrugged to the thought of it.
But it stands so tall and it's weird, like her.

Out there, girls were walking home in their stilettos.
Making that click click sound on the pavement,
and laughing about the nights festivities.
People were shouting for "Taxi!"
Others were arguing about the noise.
I want to live a life like that.
I want to be out there.. living a life worth writing about. She thought.

"Can't sleep?"
"There's too much noise outside. What are people doing outside in this hour?"
"Lost souls never sleep during the night.
They are always out there, enjoying the darkness." He said.
I guess I too belong out there.
"You belong in a museum."
"You are art.
A piece of artwork, I can stare at forever.
I always find new colors and curves of your mind that I fall in love with." The voice said.
She went numb, startled at the voice that told her all the right things.
It's you.
"Your mind is like an ocean of secrets" He said.
She was so tangled in the lie, she started to believe in it in the end.

Fluid writing really lovely! I have a deep affection for your fine city having called Brooklyn home for a while my younger sister now lives there in the Bronx. I enjoyed the use of metaphor here very refreshing. It's easy to loose ones self in the chaos and noise but we only ever need to be us...that means accepting and embracing every beautiful, dark, awkward distinction. R xo

"City of Lights"
Giuilla King,
I like how the mind relationship within is stirring from the very beginning:
"Its two a.m. and she's wide awake
staring at the moonlight
coming in from her window pane
her mind is racing and her thoughts are haunting her
he's always in her head at night."
I was taken with the strong imprint of this poem's opening and felt like the whole poem spun upon the reality of the quiet of solitude and very early morning.
Blessings and congratulations on the success of this poem! You can be proud.

A woman struggling to get past her own conceived mediocrity, romanced by the idea of someone loving her just the way she is; even mystified by her. I wonder at the duplicity. She feels this discontentment, yet its the voice in her own head which soothes her. Makes me think about how we all (writers) romanticize ourselves just a little, even through the common moments of self loathing, especially in the dark of night, watching everyone else "out there" living lives worth writing about. You know, just speaking for myself.

Guilla,
I like the style of your writing in this poem. I am a huge fan of Carl Sandburg and his "Chicago Poems." I can hear his voice in your writing.
I am a small town person but I get how people fall in love with their city. You captured your feelings in this poem.

Wonderful piece of writing. Once you start living in a lie you almost believe it entirely. I liked it too much... :)

This brought back the memories of the times I visited Manhattan and the Bronx which I still visit on occasion. So much noise and so many people. A city which never sleeps. It makes me appreciate the countryside where I now live. You've captured the essence of a NY night, the cityscape and all.

This is so good ... amazing , but humbly i say that it's not a satire, its much better, its amazing fiction , just like making a paiting with your words...

Thank you so much! I'm happy you like it. It means a lot to me :)
This is an interesting & tangled stream of images & feelings. It all goes together in the end, even tho it sometimes feels a little bit scattered here & there amongst the varying observations of life. I love your straightforward expression of how it might feel when looking out at the city that never sleeps, wanting to be part of the action, but then finding a different action at home in one's imagination. Many thought-provoking things to ponder. I wish you wouldn't make such a statement in your author's note -- no sense closing the door to any new idea that might pop in! *smile* (((HUGS)))

I know right! Thanks for dropping by :)
Wow... stunning. It captured one's feelings perfectly. I too am one for the night, I find myself writing some of my best pieces during the night. What can I say except wow? Nicely done.

Thank you so much for reading and for your kind words! :) I feel like everything comes out at night
Liquid silk is what I can say, the melting and molding of such words that know how to travel towards the heart. A night of sounded musical word play
