Virtual Dirt

Virtual Dirt

A Poem by Alex Lifeson
"

This is an expansion on my first "poem" Dirt. I just finished writing a chapter called "Addicted to Drama" and I wanted something to accompany the title. I thought about 'Dirt' and on the ride to work came up with this expansion.

"

Dirt is the opiate
Of the small child.

However, as adolescence approaches,
Occurs a change of sorts.

Where virtual dirt; human drama,
Becomes the opiate of the adult.

Good thing I am not claiming to be a poet then (please see my explanation in the 'poem' dirt). Michael was offended when I called him pretentious on this thread:

So he decided to come onto my page and "tear me a new one". Kudos!! Actually since I am an addictions therapist, I think opiate is perfect.

I knew you had a poet in you . . . once you've let it out, you won't be able to shut it up . . . he he . . . I like your expansion - though I also liked the little tiny one without the expansion. Virtual dirt becomes an opiate from about age eleven or twelve on . . . just because we're lame-minded and forget the fascinations that came along with the real dirt. Real dirt becomes yucky rather than cool to explore. Minds close and we start buying antibacterial soaps . . . We get obsessed with dying rather than living . . . sad, really . . . This poem reminds me of "Dirty Laundry" by the Eagles . . . oops, was I showing my age? Don't tell anyone!!! he he . . .

And that's the saddest thing I have heard all day. My inner Calvin is revolting.
