PrologueA Chapter by Taylor ShermanPrologue:
The Awakening “Yo, Korn, wake up. Come on man, wake up already.” That voice..why does it seem
so..familiar..who..what.. “KORN!” Where
am I.. I
slowly open my eyes, a harsh glaring light in my face. What happened to me? I let my gaze scan the room, finally settling
on the young woman in the chair next to me. “Korn!
You’re awake!” She tosses her arms around me, as if she knows who I am. Who is she? I wonder as my blank look
registers on her face “You don’t remember..” She says with a sigh and sits back
in the chair slumping over, tears brimming her eyes “Your..hair..”
I manage to stutter out, my gaze transfixed on her hair “It’s so…beautiful” What compelled me to say that? I don’t even
know her.. She
looks over at me, wiping the tears from her face “That’s the first time you’ve
ever said that Korn..” she gives me a big smile, and she bursts into a giggling
fit. Her smile..it never reached her
eyes. “Well, we best get a doctor
here to check on you.” She leaves the room and goes looking for a doctor. I
stare up at the ceiling, wondering, who she was, how I got here, and what is
going to happen now. She returns shortly with two men. One of them is dressed
in doctors attire, while the other is wearing khakis and a dress shirt. A bit
much don’t you think? The
doctor walks over and checks the equipment that I am hooked up to “Everything
is reading normal” He mutters to no one in particular “But the fact that you
have amnesia is quiet confusing, the bump to your head didn’t do more than
cause you to faint when you stood up to quickly.” He chews on the end of his
mustache “Than again, you were out for a month.” He gives me a really stern
look “As an athlete you should know you have to eat in-“The rest of his words
drown out, I was out for a MONTH. An
entire month! After
what seems like eternity the doctor sighs “Well, with the new, more aggressive
viruses I guess I can’t be harsh on you, just take better care of yourself next
time kid. You represent our future” and with that, the doctor leaves the room. “Hey
Kor” I look at the second male, finally seeing him. He seems to be looming over
me, at least 6’4, maybe taller. His heritage looks to be that of mixed Asian
and Caucasian descent. His hair is what really stood out though, going on for
what seems forever it was a very bright purple. “You seem to be having slight
amnesia so let me introduce myself. Names Argo, we’ve been friends since you
moved in next door.” His voice was like water over stones, smooth and light,
deep and mysterious, capable of anything. I
think I can see why, even though I don’t remember him, I can’t help but like
him, to trust him. He sits down and pulls out a book seemingly from
nowhere. “I’ll be here when you feel ready to speak” I just stare, trying to absorb
all the information flooding my system. Break, recite, repeat. My thoughts start
to clear while those three words play over and over in my head. “Argo..I
remember the name now but..that is all” I say while looking at him “Hopefully
it will come back to me with time.” My voice is growing stronger with each
passing moment, from having started out as a shaky rasp, to a now deep, almost
melodic tone. “And..who is she?” I turn my gaze on the girl who was sitting at
the side of my bed. “Elise” she says, her voice full of sadness, and as if she
was choking back a flood. “You took me in when my parents died during the
Revolt of ‘24” she buries her head in the bed sheets and her shoulders heave
with quiet sobs. Taking a good look at her, I notice that she is on the shorter
side; her feet don’t even touch the ground while she is in the chair.
“Elise...” I whisper “I must be really special to you” I gave her a soft smile
when she looks up, and she smiles back, tears streaming from her deep, emerald
green eyes. “You mean to the world to me Korn...” She mutters softly, wiping
her eyes. “Let us get out of her and head on home, shall we?” Her and Argo
leave to let me dress. “Elise…Argo…who
else don’t I remember…” I mutter to myself as I get dressed. I run my hands through
my hair and look around for a mirror, spotting one on the side wall I walk
over, and stop when I see my reflection. My hair is a dark rich brown, streaked
with a dark forest green, my eyes are a startling shade of blue, that seem to
draw you in until you drown in their depths. “I better shave when I get the
chance” I scratch at my beard forming “This itches like mad”. Half
an hour later I join my friends in the lobby, receiving a prescription for some
medicine to help me sleep in case I suffer any pain from moving around so much.
While I am talking to the nurse, Elise and Argo share a look, one of worry, of
fear, of regret, and most of all, of hope. This was the start of my journey to the
top, it includes everything you could possibly want to know about me, my faults
and strengths, everything I did wrong, everyone I ever loved, and all the pain
I suffered. For those of you, who have found this journal, turn back now. If
not, you may learn a thing or two you will never forget… © 2015 Taylor ShermanAuthor's Note
