Recurring Dream

Recurring Dream

A Poem by Greg Skura
"

This is a story of a recurring dream from when I was a child. Not quite a poem no rhyme.

"
It always was the same
It just seemed to continue
Suddenly there is an upright monster
In front of me in it's hands it is holding a great bolder
And it is coming for me with a roar
I scream at the top of my lungs
My screaming voice is silent
The creature throws the bolder
And I somehow manage to dodge it
I run as fast as I can but I am not moving
The creature picks me up and I start punching
My hits are like a pillow
I coward and wake up screaming
After this occurred a great number of times
I recognized the dream
Lucid in the dream I would say
This is only a dream
And I was free

The next dream
There I was inside a body of light
It appeared that there was
A great deal of commotion around me
Even though I could not see what was happening
As if I was strapped down to a steel inclined table
I could feel the cold steel on my skin
I could see the look of fear in the others across from me
I could barely move my eyes from side to side
As if I am paralyzed
Others like me not sure why we were there
Then it occurred to me maybe they are afraid
Of what is being done to me
I awake covered in sweat and still frozen with fear

Right now, to me, the second stanza works better than the first. I think it could be because it gives you the surprise "maybe they are afraid of what is being done to me", or could be that I like the sparser chain of events (um, guilty here of liking some of the same things I do in my poems. I mean, I like MY writing better when I edit out words like crazy!) Whatever 'it' is, the second stanza seems stronger to me. Keep working at it!

very intriguing, interesting how we carry some of the more intense emotional dreams with us, to me this is pure poetry because we see a very real side to you

What's the saying about dreams? "They are the windows to the soul." Maybe, there just dreams. Nightmares can affect us in many different ways, we maybe afraid to sleep at night, but we still do it. And nightmares can affect our creativity, your poem...a result. I do like it; yet it feels incomplete. I hope that you will round it out with a twist. Something like, another nightmare that you're trying to awaken from, only to find out it isn't a dream.
Keep me posted!

I've had dreams like this as well, I used to be chased by the Gestapo in one and I would hide, afraid of being found. Another one with snakes everywhere. I liked this, but I think it would fit prose better, it is a story and if you wrote it that way you could focus on details in the dream, without sacrificing the flow. Very interesting content,

sensational and smooth ~ the senses were all triggered here; i remember the feeling of this kind of paralyzing dream ~ it almost feels real and then we exhale in reality with relief!
