Chapter 2: Dream Girl

Metric unit system was decided to be used globally in the year 2037, after the second failure of a probe landing caused by one scientist using imperial units instead of metric ones. Probe was supposed to bring supplies for another year to the bio domes built on the surface of the moon, including oxygen and water reclaimers.  To avoid this failure and future confusions in upcoming space travel, only one system was decided to be used on Earth and every planet or moon visited since.

I saw that girl in front of me, girl with the dark red hair. She was completely naked, her athletic body in a fetal position. Why do I see her naked. Everything around her was white. She looked at me and stood up quickly. I looked at her hands going up, ready to grab me. I saw her breasts and my eyes stopped there. Why is she naked, this is wrong. She’s supposed to be de-.

“Eyes up here pervert!” she said angrily.

“I am sorry.”

“You should be.” She walked close to me and smacked me hard. “You f*****g killed me and now I am stuck here!”

“What?”

“You heard me a*****e!”

“This is a weird dream.”

“Yes, this is a dream,” she used air quotes when she was saying the word dream. “but I am real.”

“What do you mean?”

“I mean, that YOU absorbed MY soul into YOU!”

“What? A soul?” I said confused.

“Yes! The soul.” She points at her body with her hands going up and down. “Eyes up!”

“Why are you even naked?” I asked kind of disturbed. “I saw you burn alive! Am I really that fucked up to imagine you naked after that?”

“Are you even listening?” She put her hand on her forehead and shook her head. “Dead girl is stuck inside your body, and all you care about is, that she is naked.” She put the hand down on her hip. “Look boy, I don’t know much s**t about souls either, but I would imagine, that clothes are not part of it.”

“This is a weird dream.”

“This is NOT a dream… At least what I am telling you isn’t!” She smacked me again. I didn’t feel any pain since it was my dream. “So start to f*****g focus!”

“Alright, alright, fine.” I put my hands up. “Calm down.”

“Calm down?” Her face started to turn red. “Calm down?! You killed me and yea, before you ask, it was a f*****g painful death!”

“I didn’t kill you. It was an accident.” I tried to defend myself from my dream.

“Ok boy, first, you blinded me with that fire extinguisher, and trust me, that dust is not the best thing to get in your eyes. I give you that one, getting me between those cars so I don’t see it in your hand and also can’t dodge, but that still doesn’t mean I don’t hate you. To be honest I think it was more luck, I doubt you thought about it at that moment.” She put her hands on her hips. “Sorry boy, but you don’t strike me as the sharpest tool in a shed.” She crosses her hands on her chest. “And then you put a foot in my path like a f*****g first grader, causing me to stumble. I thought you would stand behind me and try to fight. Oh god I gave you so much credit by that thought. I used my magic to cut back where you were standing and to my surprise, you were laying on the ground like a little b***h and I found out, that I cut through some f*****g cable. Next thing I know the cable touched my clothes and you are watching me…” She stopped and looked at her body. I noticed she started to shake a little, I wanted to ask if she’s alright, but if she said the truth, then it is a really, stupid question.

“I am sorry.” I came closer to her trying to put my hand on her shoulder.

“What the f**k!” She said and swatted my hand away. “Do NOT dare to touch me! It’s enough that I feel your body like it is mine!”

“What?”

“You heard me! When you were taking that shower… ugh! I burn in one moment and freeze in the other. Really thanks!”

“That was your voice telling me to stop?” I widened my eyes in shock.

“And who the f**k else would it be? Do you have some alter ego that is a woman in your head?” She tapped my head with her finger as she was saying it.

“No.” I mumbled silently.

“F**k. Such an easy job and I f**k up this hard.” She turned her back on me and started to be quiet.

“Job?” I ask. “Who even are you?”

She sighed heavily. “Jena Alvarado” There was a moment of silence again. “Jena Alvarado, a professional magic using mercenary.”

“Magic?” I raised my eyebrows.

“Yes, magic.” She said annoyed. “Don’t tell me you thought I was cutting through stuff thanks to my manicure.” She gave me a finger still turned with her back to me.

“Ok look, this is ridiculous. I must be imagining stuff. I mean, what happened in that parking lot, is not much different from what is happening now. Maybe all this is just a dream?” I said gesturing with my hands around and then realizing it’s silly, since she can’t even see it. “Why are you even turned around?”

“Because you can focus more, on what I am trying to explain to you that way, and stop starring at my a*s, I know you are!”

“What?” I ask bit confused. “I was looking at your shoulders all the time.”

“Sure you were.” She waved her hand dismissively.

“Okay, enough of this. I am going to wake up and forget all of this.”

“Don’t you dare to forget anything; I am not going to repeat myself!” She turned to face me. This time she came close to me and grabbed me by my shirt. “Look boy-”

“Alex.”

“Huh?”

“Stop calling me boy, my name is Alex. And as far as I know you don’t seem to be much older than me. You even look younger.” I said with a firm tone in my voice.

“I don’t care what your name is, boy! All I care about right now is me! And I am stuck here!” She said her voice rising in volume. “So listen up! Do you even know why I am even here? I think, this is a really something you should be interested in, because it kind of means you got no privacy from now on!”

“What?”

“Yes! When you are awake, I can see through your eyes, hear through your ears, basically we share senses. Only thing I can’t feel are your emotions. Thank god or whoever is up there.” She said still holding me. She was bit shorter than me but that didn’t make it any less intimidating when her green eyes were starring angrily into mine.

“So you saw me shower?” I started to blush.

“Oh god…” She slapped me with her other hand. Somehow, I felt this one. “Yes I did, focus on the important stuff! You boy, are magic user too!”

“What?” I widened my eyes and open my mouth in shock. “What do you mean?”

“I mean that you have a magical talent. You are, what they call, a soul stealer. Sadly, that’s the only cool thing about you right now… That name.”

“What does that mean?” I asked stupidly.

“Ugh!” She rolled her eyes. “It means that from the moment you kill someone, their soul will get inside your body.” She let me go and pointed on her face with one finger with her eyes narrowed.

“What? What kind of fucked up magic is that?” I pressed my index finger and my thumb against my closed eyes.

“Powerful.” She said seriously. “By absorbing someone’s soul, you absorb their magical talent. Normal people have one magical talent they can use, two at max. Yours isn’t limited. This is the reason why I was hired. People with your kind of magic are usual target. They get removed before even realizing they have their power.”

“You keep saying this was a job, and that you were hired, by whom?” I asked with my head shaking. This was getting too much for one night.

“I don’t know. Targets like you are anonymously assigned. One day you just get a letter with big amount of money in it with personal information about the target. That’s how I found you. You are not my first, but obviously… You were my last.” Her eyes avoided mine and her voice became more silent with that last sentence. There was a moment of silence. Turned around again and sit down, pressing her knees to her chest and wrapping her hands around them. “Let me be.” She said with sadness in her voice.

“That screaming in my head, that wasn’t memory. That was you, right?” I asked quietly. She didn’t give me an answer, but she didn’t really have to. I knew it as soon as I asked it. There was a long moment of silence. Her sitting there and me standing behind her, looking at her. If what she said is true, she is now inside me for eternity. “What will happen to you if I die?” I asked still with quiet voice.

“Who knows, I really don’t want to find out. Probably the same thing, that happens to you. Since we are bounded right now or more accurately, I am bounded to you.” She said with a sad calm voice. Something inside me was making me feel sorry for her and something else was telling me that she is an assassin, which killed who knows how many people by now. I wanted to wake up. I wanted to wake up and not being forced to be here watching someone enslaved by me without my own will. If what she was saying was true, then future like this, might feel like hell. You are watching life of someone else, not being able to do anything about it. Like one long boring movie, where you feel everything that the main actor does, except their emotions.

I lay down on the white ground and looked at the white ceiling above me. I closed my eyes. When I opened them up, I was back in my room. It was already morning.
