tree of life

In the cold night: all seems lost in a windswept terrain to a man who stands before the landscape of frozen ice and muddled affairs gone awry within his mind. He searched for a purpose in life. He looked for the way. All that he'd built became nothing. So he stands before this field; the praire grass barren, covered in the flecks of snow and ice. Above the sky breathes a chill and makes him think of the lifeless living that are unaware of who they are. Slowly his body becomes numb; each fragment of his body gives in to the temperature of the night. First its his hands that succomb to the cold; till the freezing moves up to his arms. Its at his feet...its at his face covering each piece of his body. Before he'll let the cold win, he thinks back on how he's come here and why it never worked. He thinks about where it all went wrong, how his plans changed so abruptly only to close his eyes and tries not to think anymore. He's tired of thinking of what he's wanted. Only now does he realize that he'll never get there; to that life that he's seen so much. What at first was greed then changed to neccessity. It all came to mind as being easy but now it's so hard...too hard. To excel where his leaders had failed him. Alone in life, he walks towards the dark landscape; each step crunches the frozen grass under his bear feet cutting and numbing him even more. For he walks towards darkness, there always is and will be that small glimpse of hope that moves his legs and jogs his mind. As he walks, his eyes adjust to the darkness. Up ahead, he sees something protruding in the darkness as though it scraps the sky. He keeps walking; each step hurting even more; bleeding him, draining him. All around him he can hear noises; almost like laughing. It freightens him to hear and to think of his childhood fears. As much as he tries, he can't seem to rid himself of the haunting noises. They'll scream in bouts of insanity; making him scream within himself for a way out of the darkness. Nobody ever hear his cry except for the one who cries now.

He resumes the walking as his eyes see the distinct image up ahead. The barren branches come into view and sparks his determination. His walking becomes a run with the frozen pain becoming nothing anymore. Pretty soon, he recognizes the image as a tree; almost lifeless but almost...undeveloped. As his eyes focus more on the tree and less on the terrain, his foot catches a broken branch sending him to the ground till his face connects to the icy grass that stabs and stings against the will of the numbing wind. He keeps his eyes closed but still hears the laughter. Each muscle in his body feels ripped; each bone; broken. The laughter gets louder as the fear escalates. His body won't move but his mind will pick him up. Somehow, he ignores the laughter and pushes against the grass to get up. Only ten feet away stands a tree; erect and broken. He still has a chance to reach it...he brings his knees up and stands till he's facing the tree and he can walk to it. As he nears, a small glimpse of an arm is seen behind the tree. It stops him within his tracks. All becomes silent except for the yell of the wind. He breathes deeply as it to put out the fire within him. The smoke leaves his lungs as he places his hand on the trunk of the tree. The hard bark doesn't change under his hand, so he moves it around till he can see the person standing  behind it. When his eyes come upon the figure, he feels his chest tighten up in nervous anticipation. All at once the laughter dies out and his mind becomes calm for a brief second before a new sound graces his ears. It starts off as a low wail; a signal from a voice that speaks of demons and monsters; that fears yet pines for love.

He doesn't move yet but rather lets the woman sing with her back turned towards the tree and him. The words float around his head making him close his eyes and smile as he follows the sad yet hopeful story of the woman. Her words are of love that isn't there; of hate that won't spark and sadness that consumes her life. Within the man comes a fear that spikes. He looks towards the sky to see a sstar break away the cluods that cover the sky. This star blinks once and he looks down again to see the woman with black hair streaked red. there is no smoke, only darkness under her eyes and blood running down her hands. The man takes a step forwards and holds her hand, brings it up to his mouth till he finds the source of bleeding and kisses her wrists. She shakes but smiles as he pulls her close to embrace her. Within each others arsms can be found a warmth that protects them from the cold. They hold each as other as the wind dies away. He kisses her and the grass below their feet gets soft and wet. All around them; the coldness goes away. The stars cover the sky and breighten this desserted and barren world. They fall backwards onto the trunk of the undeveloped tree as their lips touch each others. They can feel the the tree rumble and spurt into life. Buds and leaves form on the branches and grow into a bright and healthy green in front of their eyes. As he holds her and looks behind, he can see where she came from; off in the distance can be seen the flames of the tree that she came from. As she holds him and looks up, she can see the smoke rising from the spot that he came from. They look into each others eyes and kiss again while a branch gros on the new that they've found together.
