No Light to Dance

No Light to Dance

A Poem by Rev. LeRoy James
"

A 'vision' of dancing blind.

"

Mozart's notes and sweet scent of lilacs,
braid, twist and weave a skein
of exultation in the darkness.
The sound of a master dancer's feet
keeping the beat in glorious union
with a waltz written
by musical genius.

Arms float in graceful arcs,
describing physical calligraphy,
her body's hieroglyphics translated
as joy in music's movements.
A slender torso bends and writhes;
blissfully buoyant on the waves of dance.
Twirling a madcap gyroscope orbit,
her slippered toes slide phantom swift
through the smooth darkness.

Her feet glide past
the filmed-over texture of night,
smooth floorboards lost below
in the absence of candle, lantern or flame.
No light is needed for blind eyes,
she knows each and every inch,
memorized from years of sightless
treading, steps counted metronome
six, seven, eight -
the beat of her life's joy.
