STORM OF THE CENTURY: Not!

So last night at cards while we waited for Dale to awake from her 'nap', and the so called “Storm of the Century” to commence, we discussed the last two “Snow days” called by school boards and weathermen/gals across this great Province of ours.

Although the predictions were for massive amounts of the white stuff, you can see from the picture below, that Sadie seemed to be enough of a snow plow so that I never even considered shoveling to get to my car. Laughable and an extra day off school for the kids and teachers was about all it amounted to in 2011.

However, being Canadian we react differently to the thought and reality of snow.

Where a few flakes falling in D.C or Maryland would have the U.S, calling out the National Guard, here in Thorold, on the Escarpment in the middle of the Niagara Peninsula, we treat the weather in the same way as our American cousins in Buffalo do, with both respect and anticipation as a normal part of winter.

Anyone remember the BLIZZARD of 1977? Now THAT was snow. Drifts were as high as the top of telephone polls, everything closed down for 3 whole days " in a row yet! Men on snowmobiles out risking life and limb to deliver medications and supplies to those house bound and rescuing people unluckily enough to be caught in their cars on the abandoned highways.

My husband had to take the highway home the day it began and drove through snow piles with his fingers crossed that no car or truck lay in his path. Actually most of us, once safe in our homes, remember the days with fond memories of companionship, potluck dinners and scrabble and card playing while listening to the radio emergency stations for local updates. No work. No School. Everything closed.

In reality, it looked something like today, gusting winds driving lake effect snows and nary a car to be seen as I gaze out my office window or look out the door and down the deserted street.

However, this was to be a night for visiting (a.k.a cards with my brother and sister-in-law) so now all we need do is figure out whether to brave the elements or not. To that end, I just sent my husband to the store for supplies. We’ll see just how long it takes him to make it back home before I decide what tonight will bring …

Gray Witch
"On Friday, January 28, 1977 a natural disaster struck Canada and the United States. Southern portions of the province of Ontario and parts of western and northern New York State were besieged by the blizzard of the century and millennium. During this winter hurricane, the temperature plunged to near zero Fahrenheit as hurricane force winds roared across the frozen surface of Lake Erie. Temperature and wind combined to create a wind chill of 60 below zero. Visibility was also zero and remained there from 11:30 a.m on the 28th until 12:50 a.m on the 29th of January. The storm did not subside until February. Wind gusts over 50 miles per hour occurred each day with official peaks ranging between 69 and 73 miles per hour."

It all depends on what people are used to. When I lived in south Texas, they'd close the freeways if there was the tiniest bit of ice on them. I thought it was the dumbest thing I'd ever seen. Later, after I learned how Texans drive, I saw the logic in it. They won't slow down, you see.

In England too the country seems to come to a standstill over a tiny bit of snow, which I find really annoying when you think that other countries cope with far greater extremes of snow/ temperature with ease. Pathetic!
