Vitreous Phantoms

Vitreous Phantoms

A Poem by James Gray

phantoms visions verges dark diaphanous versions drag fingers on doorframes uncertain urges kiss my corneas hiss my name submerged in corners odd half-witnessed glissade out of frame away concealed along edges gestures shift just blurry bits of pigment in the humour they say umbric layers upon my retinas smearing sight with streaks of grey not abstruse spirits in the night or sneering demons of the day upon my nerves they pop and float flash and play contorted tongues convey and call commands from dead mouths fall like sleeping serpents into my head through perforated pupils slip and slither corporeal specters of my years not specks of dust upon my tears nor absurd illusions or peripheral fears if I slide this spike into my eye stir the jelly trapped inside will I be free forever blind or will ghosts of vision plague my mind
