The Authorship Argument

The Authorship Argument

A Poem by Grant
"

A poem about a character in a poem aware that he’s a character in a poem speaking to characters outside of the poem

"
Is it so hard to think
That maybe, possibly, probably
You’re not just some anomaly?
That by divine prophecy
Your being was designed to be?
After all, look at me:
A being whose ontology
Was carefully and prosodically
Written by, to me, what seems
A realer, wiser deity,
A being whose ipseity
Transcends beyond what I can see"
Who fathoms in totality
The whole of my reality.
And wouldn’t it be irrationally
That I should say with clarity
That I’m as real as real can be
And that I, not by some entity,
Was given this identity?
So, don’t you think that it could be,
Maybe, possibly, probably,
That you, like him, are just like me?

I had to break out a dictionary (aka google) a couple times during reading this. It got kind of fun near the end to have the words ending in -ity or -ly, it gave it a really unique sort of rhyming feeling without actually having to rhyme. Maybe it was just me, but I read this with a very exaggerated lilting rhythm. It’s not a way I often read things but it really worked for this and I found myself doing it unconsciously at first read through.
In a way this was like the poetic version of breaking the fourth wall. It was trippy and requires a little bit of focus but it was an interesting read nonetheless.
