Pondering the New Year

Pondering the New Year

A Poem by Grandmary

Time ticks on the clock
old-year pass-ing
Res-o lu-tions
Remember, as a child, when that seemed so important?
Some of us had old traditions
Things to eat, resolutions to make
Singing Auld Lang Syne
After a midnight kiss
Welcoming in a new year, bright and shiny
Flawless sheet of paper
To write our lives on.
Resolutions
Promises made to ourselves to improve
Broken within a week of making
Made to impress our friends and neighbors
High toned vows we hope will lead
To awe and respect as others hear
Our strongly worded dreams
That we do not believe ourselves
For if we did, they would not repeat
Year after year, decade after decade
Never followed through
As time ticks on the clock

I enjoyed reading this. There are really so many ways to improve our natures that if we actually stuck to our resolutions we could not possibly run out of improvements in one short lifetime. I believe we should never stop trying, regardless. This year I've resolved not to be so cynical and sarcastic. I'm hoping to cut my snide remarks by half. (laughing) Here's to keeping the promises we make to improve ourselves, whatever they may be.
