The Greatest GenerationA Poem by Beatrice Boyle (Grandma Bea)A momentous day in the history of WW2...The invasion of Europe by Allied forces... led by the United States... to liberate millions of people from domination by Adolph Hitler!
It's hard to believe (for me) that today is the 65th anniversay of D Day...the great offensive of WW2 on the beaches of Normandy, France. (I was a Junior in High School and remember it well! ) Ceremonies are being held all over the world to commemorate this day. These Veterans are dying at the rate of 20,000 a day so it is only fitting that we honor them while we can.
The Greatest Generation Standing at attention Medals gleaming in the sun Old warriors remember The day D Day had begun They stormed the beach at Dodging bullets all around The sea awash with blood As their bodies hit the ground They caught the enemy by surprise That fateful day in June But they will never forget their buddies Young men who died too soon They carry the memory in their hearts And say a silent prayer Let us not forget the bravery Of each soldier who was there Sixty Five years later, their number Slowly fades away But we enjoy the freedom That they won for us that day So on this special day, Attention must be paid As we applaud in admiration These heroes...This Greatest Generation Copyright2009 Beatrice Boyle (All rights reserved) © 2009 Beatrice Boyle (Grandma Bea)Author's Note
