Cigarette Smoke

Cigarette Smoke

A Poem by Grace Wolff

To be or not to be
To want or not to want
It's stronger than me
and yet
I'm stronger than that,
what makes us weak
Like that,
what made us enemies

Stronger than that,
that's coming out of my throat and my lungs
Not cigarette smoke
But your hands that seep into my insides
and smother the fire you've kindled in me

I'm not strong, I'm stronger
Weak and weaker
And every look you give me burns me
and it breaks out,
not just strength,
but a weakness that made me stronger
And that weakness weakens me
till I feel the strength that stabilizes me

Where is that smoke blowing from?
Not cigarette smoke,
but from my charred lungs,
from the eternal scream I'm suffocating
And you fuel it
Like a flame that only burns when I close my eyes
And your eyes, wide open
they watch me burn

And I burn with you,
With your longing for me
Longing for us
You can smell the smoke from us,
'Cause we're burning

Me and you,
into the ground
like little sparks we burn, and burn, and burn, and burn, and burn
I'm burning
We're burning
We're suffocating
