We're Not Here at the MomentA Poem by Nicholas DuboeI had wrote a poem called Voicemails that was a happy love poem and I wanted to contrast it with a sad version of the same sort of concept. Enjoy! We're Not Here at the Moment It's been six months now but your voice is still the answering machine on my phone, though the only messages I have are you asking me change it and to leave you alone. Look, I know you said it's over and my house is quiet and empty of all of your things, But changing my voicemail is getting rid of the last part of you I have that still remains. I can hear you say that we're not here at the moment and to leave a message after the beep. Then at night when it gets to hard to take, I call myself repeatedly until I fall asleep. "We're not here at the moment…" "We're not here at the moment…" "We're not here at the moment…" Thats all I can ever pay attention to. And after a few hours I drift away dreaming of days filled with nothing but you. All I have left is your voice and I'll stop calling you if I have to but please don't make me delete it. Please don't make me move on. Because I'd rather live my life miserably with a machine then face the fact that "We're not here at the moment..." actually means that you're gone. © 2018 Nicholas DuboeAuthor's Note
