Outside:

A new day starts in Sacramento, California. At Sacramento High kids begin to trickle into the schools open doors. Some loiter in the front of the school doing various expressive activities. Two girls enter the grounds walking side by side.

Alice waves to a short boy sitting on a bench playing a guitar.

Alice:

Hey Louis! Sounding good!

Alice waves to a girl with stunning orange highlights in her black hair

Alice:

Ellie, nice highlights the orange really brings out your eyes!

Alice and Sky pass by a heavy set boy farting rudely

Alice yells

Alice:

Ay’ Frank cut down on the beans and rice!

Alice and Skylar cover their mouths and laugh maniacally

Skylar stuffs her hands in her pockets and glares ahead

Sky: And you actually don’t want to have your own talk show?

Alice shrugs and takes a sip from her frappicino and throws it into a nearby trash can

 

Alice:

Naw’ being a McDonald’s worker meets my needs just fine.

Alice ticks off the points

Alice:

Crappy costumers, Annoying bosses, and free frappiccino’s what else can a girl ask for?

Sky looks at Alice with doubt.

Alice shrugs

Alice:

Hey Ms. Independent Businesswoman. I don’t need a pile of cash to be happy

Sky mumbles

Sky: But I do

Alice pushes Sky a little with her elbow

Alice:

Come on. Girl I thought that exciting joyride we had last night loosened you up a bit

Sky rubs head

Sky:

It loosened up my brain and my driver’s license. Look Alice to tell you the truth my mom said that if I was caught in another stunt like that we would be moving back to Arizona

Sky cringes

Sky:

The ticket was three hundred dollars.

 

Alice:

Ohhhhh that’s bad

Alice and Sky walk into Sacramento Highs doors and continue their conversation

Sky sadly

Sky:

Ever since dad died Moms been acting really weird and Money’s been tight. She started dating some mysterious man who she said has been helping us and is practically never around anymore

Alice bites lip

Alice:

You can’t leave you’re my best friend my homey my amiga I need you. We’ve been friends since kindergarten. You were there when I first learned to ride my bike you even taught me how to tie my shoes, don’t worry about it. I’ll personally take the money out of my piggy bank for coffee and other necessities .

Sky:

Thank you so much

Alice:

I was the one who practically forced you to do the joy ride.

Alice shrugs

 

 

Alice:

But you could have always tried to jump out of the car and took your chances on the landing.

Alice trying to change subject

Alice:

Hey What’s is light and happy and controlled by me?

Alice and Sky say in Unison

Alice and Sky:

The Alice Gossip channel

They laugh and continue walking

Alice in a news reporter like manner

Alice: Have you heard about the new kid at Sacramento High? He’s supposed to be super mysterious and in his previous school all his files. Supposedly “burned”

Alice walks backwards and wiggles her fingers as if they were claws

Alice:

Spooky right?

Sky:

I bet those are just rumors like the bologna cheese monster you said “haunted” these halls he’s probably just one of those commercial stars from Hollywood or his parents are probably just big time actors

 

Alice defensively

 

 

Alice:

Hey, it was just a glitch that day old bologna sandwich in Samantha Kerber’s locker sure did look like a monster.

Alice and Sky laugh

Alice:

And there the new kid is practically being drowned by Panama and her slaves. Oh and he’s cute he would surely make the A-list

Sky looks up and studies the boys face. He has slightly tanned skin and his dark emerald green eyes are   covered by dark wavy black hair He has high cheek bones. He is wearing a black v-neck shirt and gray skinny jeans topped off with black converse. He stands with a book in his hand while Panama stands strung out on a locker next to him turning red with the ferocity of her flirting obviously receiving slow low murmurs. He senses Sky staring at him critically and looks at her and smiles .Earning her an angry glare from Panama

Alice talking excitedly and quickly

Alice:  Did you see that he just smiled at you!

Alice says like she was burned

Alice:

Oh you should have saw Panama’s face she’s totally going to get you

Sky:

Ohhhh it’s my first day back from spring vacay and I’m already on Panama’s bad side not good sooo not good.

(Hearing Sky’s thoughts)

Sky:

Panama Strong was only the most popular girl in Sacramento High and an avid member of the A-list’s posh club that everyone wants to be in. Her Dad is the boss of a top secret lab protected by the government that no one knows the name of. And Panama always gets what she wants and if she can’t literally Hell breaks loose.

 

Alice rushes off

Alice:

Bye girl gotta get to my trig class before old fussy boots marks me absent again. Best of luck with the Panama problem, Call me after school

Sky slowly waves and turns into her science classroom the teacher begins

 

Teacher:

Good Morning class

Class:

Mumbles

Teacher:

I’m glad to see that you all are alive and ready to start a day of learning.

The class groans .Sky slides into an empty desk. The desks are just two desks linked together with two chairs. Sky’s desk is only populated by her.

Teacher:

Today we have a new student. I expect you all to be on your best behavior and show the student what is expected of you.  His Name is Derek McIntyre say hello to Derek.

Class says like a robot

Class:

Hello Derek

 

Teacher:

Since there are no open desks except Skylar’s, you’re gonna have to sit with Skylar in the third row. Skylar please raise your hand.

Sky raises her hand slowly and waves sarcastically

Derek flashes her a smile and Sky rolls her eyes

 

Teacher:

Today we have my favorite thing … SELF INSTRUCTION! Which means you get to read these little slips.

Teacher waves slips in the air

Teacher:

And I get to sit down here and watch you follow THESE instructions

Class:

Groans

Teacher:

Ready…Set…Succeed…Or fail horribly the choice is yours

Teacher laughs

Teacher:

Who am I kidding it’s mine!!

Derek puts his things down beside the desk and slides onto the stool. Sky is banging her head against the desk.

 

 

Sky:

Look my day’s going horribly enough could you spare me the sweet talking and just get the project done, look I don’t even know you and already my day is being ruined  by  Panama’s possible rumors she’s probably already spreading about my very embarrassing freshman year.

Derek:

Look I’m sorry that Panama girl was plastered to me and practically drowning me in her…

Derek makes a face

Derek

 ….suffocating perfume. Besides you were the one who was staring at me

Sky says Surprised

Sky:

Me?!

Sky:

You must be mistaken because last time I checked you were the new kid and no one knows you and your files burned or some kind of crap like that, you can’t just accuse me of something obviously in human nature.

Derek:

Look let me make it up to you… There’s a new joint in town called the Smoothie Shake. I figured since it’s new and nobody really goes to new places in town it would be a good quiet place to get to know each other.

Sky gives an incriminating look.

Derek:

Look give me a chance

Derek holds up a finger and repeats

Derek:

One chance and if I screw it up I promise to leave you alone till we graduate to college.

Sky smiling

Sky:

I like that deal…What time?

Derek takes out a sheet of paper and writes five o’ clock 988-6448 

Derek:

I’ll pick you up

Sky:

Are you asking me out?

Derek turns a bit red

Derek:

If you want me too

The bell rings for dismissal of first period and Sky slips the piece of paper in her pocket and does the rest of the day in a blur. Finally school is dismissed. Sky walks to her locker and does the combination .She gasps when a note written in loopy handwriting falls out of her locker. It reads

“Stay away from Derek or else”

Sky:

Oh my gosh Panama

Sky says exasperatedly

Sky:

I can’t do this

Throws hands in air and sighs as she slams locker and pounds down the hallway. She walks to her car and kicks it when she see’s Pink spray paint is marked on various parts of it.

Sky:

Panamaaaaaaaaaaa!!!!!

Sky unlocks her car and starts it. She dials Alice’s number and listens to it ring then Alice picks up.

Alice:

Yellow?

Sky:

Hey Alice…. Uh… I need to talk

Alice:

What are you moving or something?

Sky:

…

Alice:

Say something girl!

                                      Sky:                    

                     It’s about the new kid

Alice says in jest

 

Alice:

You killed him! Don’t tell me it’s so

Sky rolls her eyes.

Sky:

No! Alice!!

Alice laughs

Alice:

Ok what about the new kid?

Sky sucks in a big breath

Sky:

The new kid, Derek asked me out

Alice:

What?! I mean you don’t know him

Sky:

I don’t know what happened I’m scared and pissed Panama left apparently her version of a threat note in my locker and trashed my car with pink spray paint. I,I,I I mean all this happened and Now Alice I don’t know what to do.

Alice:

Oh My Gosh she did that you should call the cops

Sky:

No! I mean it’ll make matters worse

 

Alice:

Darn it! It doesn’t matter what Panama says he’s the first A-list boy to ever even approach your dark circle. You should date him if you want to and don’t   mind Panama… Ooo Got to go moms calling. Tell me how it goes. Bye!

Sky shuts her phone and drives home. She pull into the driveway gets out the car. She walks in her house to see her mom sitting on the couch in a shimmery red dress her hair pulled up delicately on the top of her head and is wearing red pumps and dangly earrings topped off with smoky eye-shadow and eye-liner frosted with a ruby necklace.

Sky questionable glare

Sky:

Mom what’s up?

Mom:

I’m getting ready for a date remember I told you yesterday

Mom applies more makeup

Sky:

Mom who is this guy?!

Mom:

There’s lasagna in the fridge

Sky whimpers

Sky:

I don’t even know who this man is please at least let me know who he is

Mom:

I can’t tell you. He said he’d tell me when the time was right .

Sky:

When is the right time mom? When? Tomorrow wasn’t last month was it When is it?

Mom grabs her purse and puts her hand on the purse

Mom:

I’m sorry he’s helping us with the bills

Sky:

Grahhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!

Mom:

Sky!

Sky:

Fine! Date him! Marry him! I don’t care!

Mom leaves and Sky begins to cry she takes a shower and the cool water calms her she slips on a deep purple shirt with deep baggy sweeps and gray skinny jeans .Black converse tops of her outfit and dark black eyeliner. She takes out her phone and Derek’s number and dials he answers.

Derek:

Hello? Skylar

Sky:

Yeah…Call me sky

Derek:

Ok Sky

Sky:

Where are you?

Derek:

Outside

Sky:

How do you know where I live?

Derek:

Phonebooks

Sky:

 Oh I’ll be out

Derek and Sky hang up

Sky nervously walks outside . She sees a sleek black convertible BMW and gasps. Derek has the top open and is switched from purple  and gray to black

Sky:

Nice ride

Derek:

Thanks you  look nice

Sky:

Thanks

Sky  just stands there

Derek:

Are you gonna hop in or stay cos’ look time is flying and if you didn’t know it takes an hour and a half to  get there

Sky lets herself in the car

Derek starts the car and begins to drive

Sky looks ahead and   for at least the first second they are silent

Derek breaks the silence

Derek:

Soooo how’s your life your mom and Dad?

Sky say’s quietly

Sky:

He’s dead cut the chit chat and answer me

Derek:

Sure?

Sky:

Why did you ask me out? Why did you? Was it a dare?

Derek:

I can’t say.

Sky:

Then let me out of this car right now.

Derek:

Ok I saw something in you…

Pauses

Sky:

 What? That I’m the only blonde non-preppy person in the school?

Derek laughs

Derek:

No your attitude your aura your something special and I … I can’t help but like you

Sky resigns to a quiet stare and leans back they pull up to the smoothie shake relieved to only see two cars in the driveway they get out of the car

Derek:

You ready

Sky:

Yeah

Derek and Sky walk in and they spot an unexpected person

Sky:

Panama

Derek:

Oh no

Panama:

Hey Babe I’ve been expecting you

Lights fade out
