Loss of a Cousin

A Poem by Goodkey

Thisis a letter I wrote to a cousin. I wrote the letter just before I found out that he had passed away.

Dear Dave,

I feel so bad about not being able to get up to see you and I hear that you are starting to give up the fight.

I do not know if I can blame you on that since it has to have been a struggle.

But part of me thinks about the gifts that you bring to the family and to all around you so for you to give up is not right and yet to see and think of you in pain is not right either.

So I have been thinking of our growing up times and thinking of everything that we did – we must have been quite the combination – the cousins that did so many things together. The Friday nights at each others houses, the camping trips. Gull lake in the hurricane winds trying to put the tents up. Frontier land and the boats, the donkey that leaned against Mom in the tent, Sylvan Lake and dad trying to drive between the trees just to name a few of the adventures we had. We have so many memories and did so much of our learning together. You were always the one that knew where he wanted to go and how to get there. Terry was the comic and usually the one that everyone noticed while you quietly did your thing. It is hard to say who got into the most things in those days – I think we all had our share.

I have always been proud to call you my cousin – and although we have not had much time together as we have been adults, I always wanted to hear what you guys were doing.

I was so disappointed that we were not able to talk after Mom’s funeral but that is the way it goes sometimes doesn’t it. We get caught up in our own little worlds.

I will always be grateful as well for the help you and Tracy gave me to get started in IT. This has been such a good move for me and I am now working in Infrastructure Management.

I went to a Sing Out Calgary reunion on Saturday and met a few of the people that I think went to school with you at QE. You and Terry both have such a love of music and now that I think back is what helped me develop a love of it as well. I well remember the times Ron, Terry and yourself would be playing your guitars (especially when you were just learning) in your room. The model airplanes that hung in the room are all part of those times.

So cuz – whatever happens know that I love you and that only wish good things for you and your family.

(Dedicated to my cousin who passed away last night July 6th 2008)
