"My Family's way of Thanksgiving"

"My Family's way of Thanksgiving"

A Poem by Gregoria Somol Ahmed
"

complex and heartfelt situation

"

It’s Thanksgiving time, and the table’s set,

But the family’s tension is far from forget.
We used to say, "No matter the fight,
We’ll love each other, everything’s alright."

But now it’s quiet, no gathering this year,
The words once so strong, now distant and clear.
Arguments flew, and hearts were hurt,
But the kids still remember what we used to assert.

I was the youngest, always the one,
To babysit, play, to make things fun.
I’d teach them the lessons, even when tough,
"Love who you love, no matter the stuff."

Now, they’re all grown, and the world’s still the same,
But the siblings I adore, they’ve shifted the game.
"Don’t hang with them," they say to the kids,
Even though the problems weren’t theirs to rid.

But funny enough, the children still talk,
They know what’s real, they know how to walk
In love, despite what the grown-ups say"
They’re learning to love in their own way.

So here I am, laughing at the mess,
While the grown-ups stew in their bitterness.
But the kids? They still hold tight to the truth:
"Don’t let the past make you choose."

And though the gathering’s missed, it’s not quite gone,
Because the love we shared still lingers on.
It may not look perfect, or like it once did,
But it’s the lessons we taught, and they’ll never be hid.

So, Happy Thanksgiving, with laughter and cheer,
We’re still family, though the road’s unclear.
We’ll argue, we’ll fall, but we’ll rise again,
For the love we have will never end.
