Heart Divided

Heart Divided

A Poem by Gregoria Somol Ahmed

In the shadows of sisterhood, a call came through,
A promise wrapped in tears, painted in hues of blue.
She spoke of change, a brighter path ahead,
But the weight of the past lingered, heavy as lead.

With open hearts, we welcomed her child,
Though our means were scarce, our love was wild.
Meals were shared, laughter filled the air,
Yet the struggle of sacrifice crept in with despair.

At first, the coins trickled in like a gentle rain,
But soon, excuses replaced her sweet refrain.
We stood in the kitchen, fridges bare,
As her husband danced in freedom, unaware.

Days turned to weeks, the burden grew tall,
Each meal a reminder of love's bitter call.
We offered our home, a safe place to stay,
But the promises faded like the end of the day.

Then came the storm, accusations like knives,
As she and her partner twisted our lives.
“Return what you’ve spent,” they demanded with pride,
But what of the trust that she chose to hide?

Each sacrifice made, every penny and dime,
Was lost in the chaos, forgotten in time.
We took on her daughter, but our hearts bore the strain,
In the silence, our kindness turned bitter with pain.

So we chose to step back, to sever the tie,
With heavy hearts aching, we whispered goodbye.
For sometimes love means knowing when to depart,
Protecting your own from the weight of the heart.

Now we seek solace, a peace to reclaim,
For love should not waver, nor be a game.
In the ashes of trust, we’ll find strength anew,
For our hearts, though bruised, still know how to be true.

Existence gets painful the more we think about it.

Being kind and working relatively hard is the secret to minimizing cognitive dissonance I think... it leads to comfort.
