Savanna Rain

Savanna Rain

A Poem by Amanda Bokovoy
"

Yet another entry to an Allpoetry contest, this one winning bronze. Originally written March 4, 2005.

"

Bones are scattered upon parched earth
And yellow grass collapses in the wind.
The mud is cracked and broken
And the search for water is in vain,
For there is not a drop to be found.

A white sun beats down mercilessly
On the drooping branches of acacias.
The herds have fled the blistering heat,
Searching desperately for green grass.
Still, many predators have stayed behind.

Evening draws near, and what few remain
Begin to come out of hiding.
They look to the sky, waiting, hoping...
Then, can it be? The distant roll of thunder,
And clouds on the horizon?

Yes! The clouds soon engulf the sky
And blot out the waning sunlight.
A chorus of voices rises to meet them,
Welcoming at last the long-awaited rains,
Once again bringing life to the Savanna.
