I HATE BUTTERFLIES

I HATE BUTTERFLIES

A Poem by Ayomide Wayne

I hate butterflies.

They call it entomophobia, the fear of insects.

My back creeps like caterpillar,

I lose my spine when I see those little b******s.

however , the butterflies that I detest the most,

The ones that make my skin crawl

Are the ones that I can’t see.

My life is going perfectly, the earth spinning on her axis

The moon and sun taking turns to give light to my life,

Spotify creating pin point playlists,

Netflix taking forever to upload my favourite series,

Basically, everything is normal in the world, and then

Butterflies!!

Swarming around in my stomach.

You meet someone new, and your heart forgets all her resolutions

All the promises you made after the last heart break.

History stays past, and she presents herself with an opportunity,

To hurt once more, sending those stupid butterflies to your stomach.

And suddenly you become an expert baseball player,

Playing catch with feelings that no one’s throwing.

I mean if you knew you wouldn’t have gone over to your friend’s place,

Now you see her, and words disappear, you begin to stutter.

Struggling to string sentences together because of those butterflies.

Your perfect dry palm just become sweaty all of a sudden,

And now your heart feels like Mr Usain, racing against God knows who.

Admittedly, it feels a bit good in the moment,

But the average lifespan of a butterfly is one year,

and those are the one that eat healthy.

The butterflies in your stomach probably love fries,

So they’ll have a short life span.

Sometimes I wonder if I’ve always hated them

Or if it was birthed from my experience.

I’ve felt their wings flapping against the inner walls of my stomach

More times than I care to admit.

And every time, no exceptions

It leaves my heart in pain.

As beautiful as butterflies are, they eventually die in a short while,

And I hate them all the more, because I’ve grown to know

That butterflies in your stomach are just a teaser

For the inevitable heartbreak that comes after.
