THE ARROW AT MY BACKA Poem by Onyeuche GodsonMany people are often backbitten by gossip and the hearers wouldn't enquire to find out the truth. They just agree to what is been told to them by false bearers. Hence, this piece speaks the issuesYou can stoop me low And
step on my mountainous-head. Kick
me like a ball on the field of gossip, Toss
me like a coin on decision to pay, Even
in my absence, all truthful-lie be told. Your
cohorts may believe at the moment. But
faith will tell at last. And
what gain thy?
Hearers
are beyond measures Ears
of water overflow with blind assumption. Metres
and miles is the barrier. My
goodness to you is wrath. You
heard, never asked, thought and concluded. And
what gain thy?
Both
you and your friends are second-named “pity” Because
the false bearers and hearers are one. One
of friendly-enmity Faithful
daylight would expose minds Thoughts
of one would shatter Then
regret would be the case. Men
will hear and laugh Women
will laugh and gossip Children
will gossip, but will not forget. And
what gain thy?
Better
should have you ask me Ask
me about my harmless-evil deed men talk about Confirm
with me, the accused. The
measures you give, you get Thoughtful
minds you should have; Never
to cross the rivers without knowing it’s depth Neither
eat a meat without knowing its name. It’s
too harm a thing to bear. Don’t
end up like that. And
what gain thy?
