World at our Feet (Diamonds on the Water)

World at our Feet (Diamonds on the Water)

A Poem by Gnaughm

Diamonds on the Water

We walked down to the river

With the day strapped on our backs.

There was nothing above us but empty sky,

Nothing between us but dreams.

And there was nothing beneath us but the joyous feeling

Of the world lying at our feet

As we made our way down the valley

To the water.

Where the leaves on the trees

Were dancing for us in the breeze,

And our hearts danced and sparkled,

Just like the diamonds on the water.

We came to the streaming river,

And laid down our weary packs:

We took off our boots and our socks

To clamber on rocks.

And everything that summer’s day was

Green and blue and shining

As the sun blazed down and we cooled our feet

In the water.

We wandered back home in the evening,

With the sun setting on our backs.

There was nothing behind us but good times

Nothing in front but our lives.

And nothing beneath us but the gentle turning

Of the world lying at our feet

As we made our way up the valley

From the water.

And the leaves on the trees

Still danced for us in the breeze,

And our hearts danced and sparkled,

Just like the diamonds on the water.
