You Can't See Me

You Can't See Me

A Poem by Yemaya Theresa

We rush around living all our happy little lies.

You try not to brush against me as we pass by.

I say "Hello" but you won't even look into my eyes.

The color of my skin, the way I wear my hair,

the roundness of my body, the piercings here & there.

Seem to be blinding you.

The shell that you see does not represent me.

The flame inside, the spark you see when you look into my eyes.

That's the me you won't see,

because you can't put your prejudice aside.

Your Art works on your walls, hanging in the halls.

Mine is on my Skin does that make it a sin ?

Maybe in your eyes, but not mine.

The choices that I make are mine to keep.

Don't try to tell me how to live my life.

When you are walking in your sleep, living your lie.

Who we choose to Love & Pray to may not be the same.

Don't you know that Love knows no gender ?

That there is more then one way to believe ?

Who I choose to Love & Worship will never shame me.

You live your life by so called morals.

Creating made up  Wars in other lands.

Killing innocent children, their Fathers & Mothers.

You are guiltier then those you condemn.

Your Money Hungry dreams are nightmare for others.

Murdering your own souls with lies & righteousness.

Did you ever really have one to begin with ?

Stop living your life with blinders on.

There is more to this Big Wide World,

then the stupidity of your mind.

We are all related, all brothers & sisters of the soul.

I guess it doesn't matter because,  you... can't... see... me.

Gorgeous!
This is truly fabulous.
You even reminded me of one of my favorite songs by En Vogue, "Free Your Mind".
I love the idea of artwork upon one's bodies. I too have piercings always have.
Each one has a story, a meaning. I didn't pierce my nose because all the other kids did it. ~shaking head~
I've had many in my professional field judge me for it too.
Which is interesting in itself. I'm an anthropologist, an ethnographer.
It's my job to study other people, from other cultures. You'd think my professional ilk would understand.
Your writing is beautiful. You've made me smile, nod my head, laugh and at times sit in silence praying the tears won't fall.
Exquisite.

Wonderfully written .. and highlights the awful bigotry that still stupidly exists in certain parts of society ...

Marvellous poem and superb thoughts .....

I am now fascinated to know what the tattoos are ... smiling

This is true on different levels, in addition to what you touched upon. You know how there's that fear of the unknown? Well, I feel that this theory was made up by a people afraid of what they would never be able to totally own. So, why not go and get everything that you can possibly own, at all costs?

Today rings a new day, however; because they...can't....see....you.
