A Poem by Girl Friday (Sarah W.)

There are gradients of love -

deep hues without grace of names,

that taste of mango and honeyed pear.

I search with my fingertips, like wings spread

delicate upon the breath of a dying season,

for the lingering exaltation of a passionate horizon,

but I find only empty skies, when there should be clouds

softening the sinking glow of a stubborn sun.

There are gradients of love -

I have spent a lifetime trying to express,

with failing words, flavors I have yet to know.

Love, a great love, is something we sense and know is there, but until you have found one, you are grasping at clouds and silver air.

Eloquently said, Pryde...thank you.
Ah, Sarah... love, as experienced through the senses; surely as varied as the combinations and levels that may be experienced - in this case by the allegory of taste. I think you're right too, that there are flavors yet to know but your life is not over so.. let the grand experiment continue. It occurs to me that it really isn't the words that fail so much as we, the readers, through our lack of similar experience. Time and circumstance, the enemy of knowing, experiencing those gradients of love. Without the knowing, without a reference point of comparison, we will always be lost, unmoved by even the most eloquent and deftly chosen phrase. The fault is not yours... it's ours; we just need to get out more.
