My Moon

My Moon

A Poem by Girl Friday (Sarah W.)

Who has seen the moon rise

as a tissue paper seraph singing

ballads of brevity to a sky suffused

            with orphaned stars?

I have seen her there     swelling

above the Poplar and Ash

when night swings low to touch

            with delicate fingers

the softly trembling boughs.

She has known my deepest secrets

as crumpled paper tossed from bridges

when tears are little prayers sinking

as stones would do in deep water.

In moments of weakness     she has

watched me fall to my knees

in tear-stained supplication     and

as an ever silent saint she shines

all the brighter in times of torment.

What is the definition of beauty

if not an un-dimmable force

that as surely as our own flesh

            shrinks and thins with age

will ever remain a pale-blooming Lotus

            floating upon a charcoal lake?

Your final stanza was truly magical, Sarah. the image, "a pale-blooming Lotus/floating upon a charcoal lake" was exquisite. The moon goes through many phases in your poem, from seraph to confidante, to saint and finally to beauty itself. A truly impressive transformation which your pen moved through with apparent ease. Beautifully done!

I'm so glad you enjoyed this one, thank you!
You have a way with words that brings out the beauty within. I enjoyed this read and especially loved this line: "as an ever silent saint she shines" > the use of the s and sh sounds work perfectly to establish mood. Good job.

Thank you so much, Tom!
gorgeous just everything about it is just so beautiful, were I to be blessed as to be so sweet tempered and drawn as these incredible lines. This one is about Grandmother again? She must have been such a guiding force in your life, it's simply exquisite.
