Waking Up

Waking Up

A Poem by Girl Friday (Sarah W.)

my eyes have adjusted to Eos’ rosy fingers --

the waking Queen beyond my casement fans her fronds

to form shadow wings upon my walls, and I am revived

from a curious sort of dreamless stasis

this is a morning scented with sugared vanilla

and the crisp chill of open-windowed abandon

what does it feel like to be     alive?

because I have not known until this moment --

I have collected minutes and hours like dollars and cents,

counting them until my fingers are numb     forgetting

to stop the clock (occasionally) to savor unmarked time

but today the sun is bright     the restraints of worry and regret

are burning like Greek ships before battle

the possibilities are as infinite as the arched back of the sky,

because these early hours are for lounging contemplation --

these precious pearls belong to me

So glad you enjoyed this one!
This poem was written in a timeless classical style with its mythical mention of Eos, and burning Greek ships. This poem could have been written three thousand years ago by a pretty Greek poetess who would recite it to her friends in her garden courtyard to the tune of harps and pipes. In this case, the clock would be a sundial, and dollars and cents would be gold and silver coins.

Great poem with lots of exciting and unusual metaphors; "Eos' rosy fingers" (the morning sun), how the narrator perceives time as dollars and cents, and how "the possibilities are as infinite as the arched back of the sky". Very good description of a new day with new possibilities, Sarah :)

Thank you so very much, my friend...your words inspire so much.
"the possibilities are as infinite as the arched back of the sky,"

...that's it, the one line that awaits for me to stumble upon it being there! I must admit, I enjoy reading the comments your poetry evokes, just as much as the poem, itself. Another work of art!

My best,
Kelly

Thank you so much, Kelly...humbled...
It would be nice if we could put that time in a savings accont that we could draw from everytime the need arises, though when the sun begins to peek above the horizon and the cool breath of morning greets your face in the solitude of wonder, this is the time best used spending and savoring and not so much saving. I find these mornings are mine, the quiet before earth awakens to the day ahead. A hot cup of coffee, a soft seat in the grass, the silent wings of a butterfly seeking its breakfast, my time, alone and one with who I long to be...nature.

my pleasure .by reading your poems I enrich myself.
You already had me with the first stanza, but I grew giddy when I got to vanilla...there is a good bit of vanilla in my earlier works, it's my favourite scent, and my favourite ice cream flavour for what it's worth haha This is such an uplifting and soulful piece...we should all hope to feel Eos' hand on our shoulder in the morning, rousing us from a night's slumber...I loved the idea of collecting time like money as well...both are gone before we know it...but that doesn't numb the sense of optimism I take from this piece...great work Sarah :)
