Backwards/Forward

Backwards/Forward

A Poem by Gio S.P.
"

A poem about regret and acceptance.

"
When we were kids, you were always
picked on for being "too skinny"
And I'd throw my lunch at those idiots

I'd starve because I loved you
I didn't know what love was at the time
but whenever my mom turned on my
night light, I'd turn it off because
the thought of you burned bright
behind closed eyes.

And maybe this heart stumbles backwards
when your name is spoken,
And maybe I should have been more

forward.

Regrets are no different than scars, they're just in different places. The impact love can have on a youngster may last a lifetime. When a name is mentioned all feelings immediately come back as though it were yesterday. We all have regrets but life refuses to turn around and go back. I've tried, it doesn't always work. We live with our past whether we want to or not. Nice writing here. I enjoyed thinking about it.

This is really touching, Gio. Two very powerful images put across perfectly because of how cohesive they are with the narrative. The backwards/forwards connection is clear and forceful on the reader also. Great stuff, man!
