PrologueA Chapter by Kenzi Griffin
The little girl took a deep breath before she submerged herself under the water. She took a few moments to come up for another breath. “Jenna, don’t stay under too long. You need air.” the little girl’s mother called out when the little girl came up. Jenna smiled at her mother and laughed before taking another deep breath and diving under the water. She grabbed for a rock, missed, and tried again. After failing to get the rock she wanted, she changed her mind on the activity she was doing and decided to swim out farther than her parents wished her to. She saw a huge shape under the water and swam toward it, forgetting about the log that her mother had warned her about. Don’t go near the log. Her mother had said to her twenty or so minutes ago. Jenna saw a fish and tried to swim towards it. She followed it to the huge shape and she pushed her hand against it, trying to get the shape to move. She ran her hand across it as she swam around it, still trying to catch the fish. On her other side, she felt something brush against her. She turned and saw a bigger shape, reaching out to grab it. She started seeing spots and decided it was time to go up for air. She started swimming towards the surface, but couldn't move. She started kicking furiously, grabbing at the rock in front of her. Her hands slipped against the smooth surface of the rock and she tried to scream. Water rushed into her mouth as she tried to breathe in.
“John, have you seen Jenna come up anytime soon?” Her mother asked her husband as she scanned the surface of the water. “No, I thought you were watching her.” John said, flipping the hamburgers. “I was but I had to go inside to get you a plate. I told you to watch her.” her mother said. “I’m sure she just got a little far out, Sally. She’ll be fine.” John said, putting the plate down and coming to stand behind his wife. “Now let’s see.” He said, scanning the water. “I can’t see her either..” He said, trailing off as he saw a disturbance in the water near the sunken log. “John, what if..” Sally trailed off as she followed John’s eyes. “Oh, no.” she whispered. “Sally, go get a towel.” He stripped his shirt off and kicked off his shoes. “Now!” he yelled at his frozen wife. She jumped into action and ran into the house. John dived into the river and swam as far as he could before coming up for air. He dived back under and swam as quick as he could to the log. “Jenna!” He yelled. “Jenna!” He felt around the log and his hand connected with something solid. He pulled the branch that had his daughter hooked and lifted her up. “Come on, sweetie. Breathe.” he said, holding his daughter close. He swam back to the house and carried his daughter out of the river. “Call 911!” he yelled as his wife handed him the towel. He checked Jenna’s pulse and the tears started flowing. “No.” he whispered, as he started CPR. “This can’t be happening.” “John, is she …?” Sally took a deep breath. “Oh, Jenna.” she whispered as the tears fell. “My baby girl.” she cried as she took her daughter away from her father, who had given up on trying to revive their daughter. She held her daughter close and cried. I stood back and watched, not believing what I had witnessed. I could have stopped the little girl’s death. I could have prevented it. But I had been too stubborn. I didn’t want anyone to know of my secret. I took a deep breath and felt the warmth spread across my chest. “Come on, young one. It’s time to go home.” I whispered as i reached out my hand to the little girl. She reached out and put her hand in mine, looking back at her parents. “Will they be okay?” she asked me, looking up at me with sad, brown eyes. “They’ll be fine, sweetie.” I replied, staring at the parents of the lost girl. “Promise me?” Jenna said, gripping my hand tighter. “I promise.” I squeezed her hand. “Now it’s time to go.” I took a deep breath and we disappeared in a flash of light. © 2012 Kenzi Griffin |
