Lifespan

Lifespan

A Poem by Gina

Put makeup on to look pretty

Got ready to hang in the city

Sparkle like glitter

Act thrifty, but not petty or snippy

Because you’re witty

That look suits you

Because no one looks nice sad

You know you don’t have to

But you want to be that girl people compliment

Inside the tornado is self-torment

Be proud, be thankful

Don’t stare into the crowd

Don’t float in an imaginary cloud

Don’t scream out loud

You need to know how to live

What you wouldn’t give

To feel something real

Something ideal

But instead

you keep yourself concealed

And leave them mislead.

Confuse them some more

Let them call you a liar

But that’s what you’re here for

You weren’t a voodoo doll before

You weren’t a cuckoo to implore

But it was what you made yourself

Continuously like a carousel

A ticking bombshell

Crying for “self-help”

Disappointment

Embarrassment

Fake encouragement

But it’s all part of some strange plan

And it all began with a trick with my lifespan

Powerful. The world, media, and those who teach us, often influence poor decision making choices for girls everywhere. If we try and own our confidence, we're frowned upon. It's time to tear those walls down and it begins with self reflection, not seeing the mirrored version of who they're supposed to be. I love how this is a true look at one's self, and how disgusted we feel when we lose ourself. Keep writing. You have a way with words; it connects with the heart and soul. Thanks for making me reflect and see my potential. Keep reaching for the moon, you can land among the stars and still shine.
