What's Mine

What's Mine

A Poem by David McNeeley

You tell me there are rules
You tell me they are so important to follow
But rules don't keep me warm at night
And rules don't feed my hungry stomach

I want a world without restrictions
A world without limits
If I can't please you it shouldn't bother me
But for some reason it gets me so nervous

I'm tired of being told I'm not good enough
I'm sick of trying only to fail by your standards
I've given my life to obedience before
And the outcome is not pretty

We must change as the world changes
We  must grow into something more
I want to improve
I really want to be better
But I won't bow to any man
And I won't live in chains

You said you want me here
You said you will try to lead
But I only see a follower of strict principles
I only see a soldier marching on cue

I want what I've seen in store
I want to be what I've been made for
I want to do what's right
I want what's mine
