We Who Walk The Night

We Who Walk The Night

A Poem by David McNeeley

I was born In darkness
But raised in the light
Chosen to be an agent of the bright
But now I know were I came from

You say I'm meant for so much more
But how do you know your way is right
How do you know you live in the light
If only you could see the beauty in the night

Brothers and sisters, for centuries they have condemned us
We who walk the night
Searching the darkness for light
Finding in ourselves the hope that already shines on them

You say our light is less
You say our hope is for the darkness
But we have found the ancient script
Proof that your light is little more than a reflection

If you saw her hair glisten
You would fall under her spell
Just like I once did
But you could never understand
The duty of the children of the night

We are the darkest secret
We are the shadows
We have returned for a reason
The true darkness has risen yet again

There is a time for all to live in the light of the sun
And a place where the night offers no fearful demon
But we brothers and sisters must rise
For the children of the day need us to protect them

You think the night is nothing but darkness
But you forget that stars
Who choose to shine only once the sun goes down
You see we both serve the light

Friend please watch the day
As I watch the night
For true evil will not hide in the shadows
No instead it will disguise itself as an angel of light

It will entice your children with songs and endless dance
It call you to complacency in her couch of despair
Last of all it will call you to arms for a nonexistent cause
Using hatred and fear to drag you from all light

So I say to you son of the light
Rise with me to fight this darkness
So that the enemy of our souls may know fear
As he watches our unorthodox union lay waste to prejudice
