The Beast Who Wins Today

The Beast Who Wins Today

A Poem by David McNeeley

I have been many things
I have fallen every time
And yet I rise again
But this time I refuse to walk the same way

I have knelt before the god of tradition
I have bowed to routine and fashion
But now is the time to move on
And I'm ready to sing again

You've said I should be true
But I can't seem to see the purpose in the pattern
I wish to change and results have yielded nothing
I want what has evaded me for so long

You said I have to figure out what you should do about me
A Punishment of my choosing
But I'm not some child
I don't bend before you in fear
I'm not a soldier, up for review

I'm sorry if my tone offends
But my mind was built to examine and understand
People are weak and flawed,  so easily hurt
I just find the cracks and point them out

I don't mean to be critical
I don't mean to make you cry
But when you tell me, I'm living wrong, I'm liable to strike back
I've worked hard to construct this wall of lies
I've labored all my life to fashion this falsehood
And you come along poking holes
Asking me to tear it down
It may seem admirable to you
But you've never seen what lies beneath this facade
You've never seen the real me
I mean sure you've peered throught the holes you poked
But there's still so much monster left to see
And he's not sure he wants to be set free

I want things to be different
But there are a few I'm sure I don't want to change
So let me be
And let the beast fed be the one who wins today
