Dreams Past

Dreams Past

A Poem by David McNeeley

They’ll try to tear us apart

They’ll scream and yell

Throwing things and crying

But I know you’ll love me still

Friend we know so little about one another

Girl I wish you could see for just one moment what I see

When I look into your eyes

I think I’m falling for you

I’ve always held back, I’ve been safe

But with you I want to say “screw it all”

And kiss you sweeping you away in passion's sweet embrace

Even though I know it could never be

Love is a fickle heartless game

It takes you over body and soul

Leaving nothing in return

But an empty husk of what you once were

You dreamed once we were together

Fated to rest in each other’s arms forever

But that dream you’ve long forgotten

And the one you said I am is still yet to be

So as I watch you with wanton loss

My heart burns for what I hope will be

And mourns what can never be regained

If only the one who made me would return and claim me as his own
