A Poem by Gabrielle

My hand was made strong

I just want to fight like everyone else,

But I’m just a kid like everyone else.

No one takes me seriously,

But I always promise to be good.

I fought one day;

We were pushing each other to the limits.

I can’t unsee what I saw that day,

I try to forget it any way I can.

No matter what I do,

They’re still in my memories.

I bet they never even thought about the glitter dancing on the skin,

I bet they forgot that just flesh and blood exist,

I bet they forgot I’d grow up.

I bet they forgot now I’m twenty years old .

They told me to get in there,

And you choose the road.

They told me to try harder and to punch harder,

To dedicate myself and I can find self.

Here I go into the ring for the first time since i was 7 years old,

There’s my opponent.

He looks tough;

But so am i.

I look at him and say ‘you ain't seen nothing like me yet.’

And the bells go off.
