love/drugs/and/other/needless things...

A Poem by Ghostwryta
"

just a little piece capturing that addictive part of love that is bad for you

"
love/drugs/and/other/needless things…

needless to say, love is a needless thing

who needs it?

i/ve spent a lifetime loving and being loved

years being addicted to you

as if you were a drug

chasing you, running from you

feeling so high, dwelling so low

getting that fix

then hiding in the shadow

ashamed because love feels like a cover

concealing our sins

and we both know we need a resolution

instead love always ends up being the solution

smoking mirrors providing an illusion

of happiness that the world smiles at

while behind closed doors love is just an excuse

to excuse ourselves from ourselves…

somehow, somewhere along this road

“I love you” became much more self fulfilling than “I love me”

and I just kept injecting your love intravenously

because it/s the fastest way to get one’s heart racing,

and I could never beat you…

needless to say, I/m here in this padded room pacing

fiending yet for another hit of you

as if your love is not a side effect…

I find this humorous because I have a poem that is the exact opposite of this!
Now, There are some things in this poem that I do agree on, and some that I don't.
I don't believe love is a let off. Yes, it is used as a let off more often then it should, but true love is not a "cover", as you said, it is a relief. It's to open up to someone you know you can trust with your life. I think maybe you need true love in your life, and not your let off-love.
The parts of the poem I do enjoy is taken from the other end of the spectrum: When you do encounter a conditional love like this it is used as a drug and an illusion. I must say that the line '"I love you" became much more self fulfilling than "I love me"' is very accurate in these cases. People seem to feel the need to lie about their low for others because it makes them feel good about themselves, and this line captures that beautifully.
Overall this poem was well constructed and a good read. It got me to think, and that is something I highly value in writing.

I don't understand the use of "feigning" here. It means to pretend or fake. Perhaps the word yet is throwing me off? Might just be me.
