Sinking in winter

Sinking in winter

A Poem by Nick Demus

Sinking in winter

A morning spent in grateful solitude

Rising before the sun and singing before the birds

Outside on the patio, painting patches of the air with

my breath, my own creation myth

This is where I want the clouds

Autumn leaves outstaying their welcome

Huddled together in the corner for warmth

Occasionally, the morning steals them away, but always in twos

Clinging in weather

Inspired by hope to outlast the winter

Mumbled requests for dust to linger

Undefined ink completes a pristine skyline

Candle wax comforts, the washing line ablaze with

Crimson, sinking in winter

My tights chests prayers to outlast the weather

Chilled caress through shattered water

Cleansed of what the morning can't freeze
