The Continentals

The Rise of The Greek gods!

Chapter 1

The Continentals returned to Castle Dark-Rider a half a day after they had buried The Dark-Rider.  Zendra went into her quarters and wept.  She had been holding back the tears to appear strong for her team, but deep down she was hurting.  She still had feelings for The Dark-Rider, but now he was gone.  She had promised herself that she was never going to give into her feelings for him again.  After she finished weeping she promised herself that she would be strong and not give into those feelings.  The rest of the night she spent tossing and turning, wishing she could sleep, but each time she closed her eyes all she saw was The Sword of Chaos stabbing Dark-Rider in the back over and over!

She got out of bed, washed her face and got dressed in her uniform and went down to The Holo-Dome.  When she got down there she saw Gill-Girl swimming in the pool and Blacksmith working on a new armor.  “Couldn’t sleep either?”  Red Coat asked her as he came out of The Holo-Dome.

“No I couldn’t,” She answered as she looked around and saw the rest of the team following behind him, “It would appear I’m not the only one.”

“Might as well join in with us, we’re about to start another session.”  Mr. Sumo offered.

“Sounds better than moping in your room.”  Kopy-Kat blurted out.  Zendra gave her a disapproved look, “Not that I was spying on you or anything.”  Zendra nodded and motioned for them to follow her into the room.

Chapter 2

Dr. Wrong was awoken from his sleep from a messenger who knocked on his door.  The messenger reported that Superior was in need of Dr. Wrongs’ presence.  Dr. Wrong told the messenger to tell Superior that he would report momentarily.  Dr. Wrong pondered within in his mind of what the possessed leader of The Society would want of him.  He entered into the new throne room of Superiors’ new castle that had replaced The White House.  “You have called for me?”

“Yes, I have.”  Superior answered as he got up from his throne and walked down the step to be face to face with Dr. Wrong.  “It has come to my attention that The Alpha Squad and Beta Force is not the only teams of “heroes” that I need to be concerned about.”

“Yes there is also The Continentals, The Banished…”  Dr. Wrong began to list off.

“The Banished will be Dark Dragons’ problem.”  Superior cut him, “Continue.”

“And finally Black Ops and The Ghost Squadron.”

“Let’s start with the first one you mentioned, The Continentals.”  Superior suggested with authority.  “What can you tell me of them?”

“I believe intelligence would be my department not that of a scientist.”  Ruthers interrupted.

“Very well you can tell me.”  Superior acknowledged.

“The Continentals are an international team led by my niece Zendra.  Turns out she is what we call Abnormals.  She has super human strength, and healing capabilities.  Her team consists of Kopy-Kat who can make copies of herself, Mr. Sumo who is a former Sumo wrestler from Japan; he has super human strength and also would appear to be invulnerable.  That is all we have so far on them, there are others but this is all we have been able to gather thus far.”

“Then I believe it is best that we keep them busy as much as possible.”  Superior spoke up, “Dr. Wrong I want you to bring in your team that you call Mythos.”

“I shall bring them.”  Dr. Wrong bowed and he left for a few moments and came back with Mythos.

“You want to see us Superior?”   Zeus asked as he and the others bowed.

“Yes, I am need of your help.”  Superior began to say.

“Dr. Wrong has told us you wish us to destroy the traitor Zendra and her teammates.”  Aries commented.

“Yes, however I just need…your bodies!”  Superior told them as he shot out beams of red dark energy from his hands that slammed all of them against the wall!  Shackles from the wall clamped over their wrists and ankles.

“What is the meaning of this?”  Aries asked.

“You may bear the names of those whom were once great gods of so called Greek Mythology, but you are nowhere near the greatness they once possessed.  But now your bodies will come in handy for their return.”  Superior explained to them and began to speak out an incantation.

“Dr. Wrong!  You can’t let him do this to us!”  Medusa cried with tears streaming down her face.

“Why are you asking me of this?”  Dr. Wrong asked, “You are nothing but pawns that will soon bring greatness back into this world.”

The members of Mythos screamed as they tried to break themselves free from their demonic shackle, but to no avail.  Dark silhouettes arose through the ground below and entered into Mythos and soon the screams stopped.  The shackles released them and they bowed before Superior.  “Master is that truly you?”  Zeus asked.

“Yes my old friend, I have freed you from your cells within The Abyss.”  Superior told him.  “Now all of you rise.”  They rose and came into the light for Ruthers and Dr. Wrong to see not only were they possessed by the Greek gods of old but also their appearances had changed to their own liking.

“How long have we’ve been imprisoned?”  Aries asked.

“Long enough my servant, long enough in fact that those who used to worship you have now forgotten you.”  Superior told them.

“Then we shall return to Greece and take are rightful places as gods among men.”  Zeus declared.

“Also be sure that they are to also see me as their master of this world.”  Superior told them.

“We shall do as you have commanded.”  Zeus bowed and the others followed suit.

“Also I must warn you that there are new warriors of the one whom imprisoned you.”  Superior explained to them, “They are called The Continentals and they will be the ones most likely to be sent to defeat you.”

“If they do come after us, we shall kill them!”  Aries declared.

“Yes my son that is exactly what we shall do.”  Zeus agreed.

“However if I may make one request?”  Ruthers bowed before them.

“And what is that mortal?”  Medusa asked.

“The leader called Zendra is my niece, I would prefer you kept her alive just long enough for me to have the honor to kill her!”

Zeus looked at Superior who nodded in approval, “It shall be done as you have requested mortal.”

“I am forever grateful.”  Ruthers bowed and left the room.

“If you may no longer need of my assistance my master I too shall take my leave.”  Dr. Wrong bowed, as Superior nodded.

Dr. Wrong walked down the hallway until he was grabbed from behind and pushed into a room.  “What is the meaning of this Ruthers?”

“Did you know he had the power to do that?”  She asked him in fear.

“I had my suspicions yes.”  Dr. Wrong answered.

“He makes Superior look like a tamed lion!”

“Must I remind you that he is now Superior!”

“Yes, I know, but now I fear for the rest of us.”  Ruthers told him, “If he can do that to our henchmen what do you think that he won’t do that to us?”

“Then it’s best we continue to show that we are worth something.”  He told her.

“I’m warning you Doctor, if I become possessed, I’ll be sure that you are standing there next to me.”

“You’re threats mean nothing to me.”  He left the room and went to his lab.

“They’re not threats…they’re promises.”  She told him underneath her breath.

Chapter 3

Jacob Cagney contacted The Continentals through I.Q. 3 and informed them of their new mission.  “An anonymous tip has given me information of a disruption in Greece.  It would appear that The Greek gods of old have returned.”

“How is that possible?”  Gill-Girl asked.

“Samhain, he must have the power to bring them back from The Abyss.”  Zendra deduced.

“You are correct.”  Jacob concurred, “It would appear that he has taken Mythos and used their bodies to bring them back.”

“How horrible!”  Kopy-Cat cried out.

“Yes, and it would appear that the possession is permanent…”  Jacob started to say.

“Which means?”  Red Coat asked.

“It means that whoever they were before are no longer living.”  Jacob answered coldly.

“Just like Superior when Samhain possessed him.”  Mr. Sumo added.

“Exactly, you must go to Greece and stop them at all costs!”  Jacob ordered.

“We shall leave within the hour.”  Zendra told him.

“Very well, God be with you and God speed.”  Jacob told them and the screen went blank.

“Roy there’s no telling how long we’ll be gone.”  Zendra turned to him, “Until then you and your family are in charge.”

“You shall find it as you have left it.”  Roy assured her.

“We have a mission so let’s get ready.”  Zendra told the others and they went to their designated areas to prepare.

Mr. Sumo helped Blacksmith load his four different Armor Suits into their air craft called The Golden Eagle.  “How many do you have Blacksmith-San?”

“Well let’s see, we’ve already loaded my first one I have called The War Hammer, then the one in your hands is called “The Night Raven, all that’s left is The Leviathan Armor and my latest Armor I call The Gargantuan!”  He pointed to the giant crate.

“How big is it?”  Mr. Sumo asked after he had put The Night Raven down.

“Or will it be is the better saying.”  Blacksmith corrected, “It’ll be at least sixty feet tall when I am done.”

“Do you plan on fighting a giant or something?”  Kopy-Kat asked.

“Do not forget that our enemies have a Giant.”  Zendra reminded her.

“Let me guess you didn’t read the briefing package that Jacob sent to us?”  Blacksmith asked Kopy-Kat.

“I was going to read it on our way there.”  Kopy-Kat defended herself.

“Just be sure you do so by the time we get there.”  Zendra told her sternly, “Otherwise you can just stay on guard duty while we’re there.”

“You can count on me boss lady.”  Kopy-Kat assured her.

“Don’t call me that.”  Zendra told her coldly, “I might be in command but I am nobody’s boss.”

“What’s gotten into her?”  Kopy-Kat asked the others after Zendra had walked off.

“Dark-Rider is dead remember?”  Gill-Girl reminded her.

“Yeah and we’re all saddened by it.”  Kopy-Kat acknowledged.

“The thing is Zendra and Dark-Rider had a bit of a fling you might say.”  Red Coat told her.

“Really those two?”  Kopy-Kat asked in disbelief and the others nodded, “Wow who’d knew?”

“If you’re all are ready let’s get out of here and head to Greece.”  Zendra told them as she went into The Golden Eagle.  They finished packing the plane and took off.

Chapter 4

He looked down upon the earth below through the well.  Michael Black, The Dark-Rider gazed upon The Continentals as they left Castle Dark-Rider to their destination of Greece.  “What are you doing young one?”  Gabriel asked him.

“I’m checking on some of the other teams.  Right now it’s The Continentals that I’m concerned about.”  Dark-Rider informed him.

“Why are you concerned about them?”  The other Angel Michael asked.

“Because they are about to go against Zeus and his minions.”  Dark-Rider looked at them hard, “And I’m referring to the ones that have escaped The Abyss.”

“It would appear that Samhain is getting desperate if he has summoned them.”  Gabriel pointed out.

“If that’s the case then maybe it’s time for me to return.”  Dark-Rider said bluntly.

“I am sorry to say but it is not time for you to return.”  Michael told him.

“The only way for Zeus and the others to return to The Abyss is to kill their hosts!  And the only way to kill them is with The Sword of Power.”  Dark-Rider argued.

“What you say is true.”  Gabriel agreed.

“However you are not the only one that can wield The Sword of Power.”  Michael told him.

“Who would that be?”  Gabriel asked.

“Zendra, she’s the only one that I know who’s had nearly the same type of sword training as myself.”  Dark-Rider mentioned.  “She would be the best candidate to care for it until my return.”

“She can be trusted.”  Michael nodded.

“My question is who is to deliver it to her?”  Dark-Rider asked.

“Either Michael or myself shall deliver it to her.”  Gabriel told him.

“Very well.”  Dark-Rider agreed as he looked into the well once again.

Chapter 5

The Continentals landed The Golden Eagle a few miles outside of the city of Thessaloniki and exited their craft.  They could see Mt. Olympus from where they stood and could see that an area of the great mountain had been cut out and had been replaced with a great castle.  “Well that didn’t take them long to build.”  Blacksmith observed.

“But here’s my question, how long have they been here?”  Kopy-Kat asked. Seconds after she asked, a man came flying through the trees!

“Your question will have to wait; we need to check on that poor mate!”  Dingo told her as they rushed to where the young man landed.  When they arrived they saw that the young man was brushing himself off.

“Looks like the bloke seems to be unharmed.”  Red Coat spoke up as they drew nearer.

“More of the so-called gods’ minions?  No matter I shall slay you with great vengeance!”  The young man threatened.

“Take it easy we’re here to help you.”  Zendra said calmly, “We’re The Continentals, I’m Zendra and this is my team.”

“Forgive me, you may call me Spartan.”  He introduced himself humbly.

“You must be an Abnormal otherwise there would be no way that you could survive that attack.”  Mr. Sumo told him.

“If that is what you call people like myself, and I take it that you are as well?”

“Only some of us are.  Blacksmith and Dingo are human.”  Zendra informed him, and she explained what she and others can do.

“Praise God above that you are here!  I’ve been praying for the since those false gods came that he would send someone to rescue all of Greece!”

“But that castle looks like it’s been there for ages!”  Kopy-Kat exclaimed.

“Part of the evil magic that they have brought upon us!”  Spartan told her, and then they could hear heavy footsteps!  “It is Aries!  He must be trying to track me.”

“Doesn’t sound like he’s alone either.”  Blacksmith pointed out to the hair that could be seen among the tall trees.  “He must have Giant with him.”

“Quickly!  Everyone inside the jet, we’ll activate the cloaking device once we’re inside.”  Zendra ordered.

“Why not fight them?”  Spartan asked following after her.

“Because, we have no idea how many are with him.  Plus we’re not fully prepared to do battle with the likes of Aries.”  Zendra explained to him.  Once they were inside, Dingo activated the cloaking device and they waited to see what would happen next.

As Aries and Giant approached the field where The Golden Eagle lay hidden within the cloaking field.  They observed the field and spotted where Spartan had crash landed in the trees.  “It would appear that the mortal who defied me has somehow survived.”  Aries pointed out.

“Where do you think he went?”  Giant asked him.

“It doesn’t matter at his point.”  Aries answered him, “We have more matters at hand that calls for our immediate attention.”

“And if he returns?”

“Ha!  If he is fool enough to return, even with an army of fifty legions we would crush them in a matter of moments!  Come let us take our leave.”

Moments after the duo had left; The Continentals deactivated the cloak and exited the jet.  “Good thing they turned back, I don’t think we could handle the likes of them at this point.”  Red Coat thought out loud.

“That may be so, but we do need a place for a base of operations.”  Zendra told them.

“There are some caves not far from here.”  Spartan pointed to the opposite direction of where Aries and Giant went.

“Take us there, Red Coat I want you to go to the nearest town and do some recon.  Find out what you can and return here.  Blacksmith and Dingo you shall remain here to guard the jet.  The rest of us will follow Spartan into the caves.”  Zendra gave out the orders.  Red Coat gave a bow and headed in the direction of Aries and Giant.  The rest of them followed Spartan two miles away from The Golden Eagle; Zendra called Blacksmith and Dingo and gave them the position of the caves and for them to report on an hourly basis.

“We run a small operation.”  Spartan told her as they entered the caves and saw that there were families living within the caves.  Spartan saw the looks on the teams faces’ and he explained to them, “These are people who have decided to hide away from Zeus and the others.”

“They look terrified.”  Kopy-Kate said in a hushed tone.

“They have every right to be, their livelihood has been taken from them.”  Spartan told her as he gave an old woman some water.

“I take you were on your way here when you ran into Aries?”  Zendra asked him.

“Actually just the opposite, I was fishing to feed them.”  He nodded to those in the cave.

“We brought rations with us.”  Zendra told him, “Mr. Sumo, Kopy-Kat I want you to go back to The Golden Eagle and bring our rations here.”

“How much?”  Kopy-Kat asked.

“All of it but be sure to leave some with Dingo and Blacksmith.”  Zendra told her, and they left.

“Thank you.”  Spartan whispered.

“It’s what we’re here for, now if you will excuse me, I need some fresh air.”  She excused herself and went outside and prayed.  “God of heaven, I have no idea what I am to do to defeat these beings of The Abyss, please give me an answer.”  No sooner had she prayed a man dressed in white stood there with a sword in hand.

Chapter 6

Red Coat walked among the townspeople unnoticed thanks to his ability to turn invisible.  He had spent nearly two hours in the market place which was had turned out to be a great source of information.  He had found out that most of the military had joined up with Ares and those who had been considered deserters had either were able to escape or would hung in the public square as a warning to those who defied the gods.  The first born men were to join under Ares, the fishing towns of Greece were to worship Poseidon and bring him tribute of their catch.  Others followed the other gods as they pleased, and the creatures such as Siren and Medusa were given the first daughters of peoples to be turned into their priestesses.  Some of this information wanted him to gag!  But he held his composure and decided it was time for him to leave and return to base.

Zendra stared at the man in white and eyed the sword that he was holding in his hands.  “Greetings Zendra.”

“And who are you?”  Zendra asked him.

“I am Michael an Angel of God!  I have come to bring you The Sword of Power to aide you in your battle against the demons of Greece!”

“But does that mean Dark-Rider…”  She began to tear up.

“He is fine; he is alive to an extent.”  He told her.  “He sends his best wishes to you.”

“When will he return?” She asked him.

“You will know when he comes back for this.”  He referred to The Sword of Power.  “Until then you are to care for it and use it wisely.”

“I shall do so.”  She bowed and took hold of the sword and Michael disappeared.  She looked up to see that Mr. Sumo and Kopy-Kat was returning with rations.  She wrapped the sheath belt of the sword around her and helped them bring in the food and gave it out to the people.

A few hours later, Red Coat reported in and told Zendra and others all that he had found out.  When he was finished he asked, “What’s our next move?”

“We'll have a good nights’ sleep and then we’ll think out our next move.”  Zendra told all of them and they bunked down for the night.

Chapter 7

Zeus sat on his throne that allowed him the greatest view of Greece that no mortal would ever see.  Once again this is all belongs to me.  He thought to himself admiring the view.  Though my master Samhain rules this world, it is I that shall rule Greece as in the days of old.  Hades approached the throne and bowed, “Arise my brother, what new have you?”

“All is going according to plan; soon the rest of our family shall be free.”  Hades reported.

“Excellent, our master will be pleased to hear it.”  Zeus said in a pleasant tone, “And what of the heroes that he warned us about?”

“There have been rumors of a golden colored bird or plane as they call it in these days; it has been seen flying throughout the land.”

“Then it must be them, and soon they shall fall.”  Zeus said with assurance.

“Shall I send an army to flush them out?”  Hades offered.

“No, let them come out on their own free will.  It doesn’t matter if they have powers or not, there is no way that they are more powerful than we are!”

“Agreed, and who would dare to defy the true gods of Greece?”  Hades and together they said, “NO ONE!”  They laughed evilly.

“Come brother and let us feast upon the finest fruits of the land” Zeus patted him on the back.  They sat down as slave girls served them.

Chapter 8

The next morning came early for The Continentals.  Zendra rose out of bed before anyone to pray.  When she returned she saw that the others were eating breakfast.  “I have a plan.”  She told them.

“We’re listening.”  Spartan told her.

“Teiresias, also known to the Greeks of old who could see into the future.”  Zendra started, “I believe he should be the first of them to be killed.”

“And how do you plan on doing that?”  Red Coat asked her.

“With this.”  She pulled The Sword of Power out of its sheath.

“Is that what I think it is?”  Kopy-Kat asked.

“Yes, this is The Sword of Power.”  Zendra confirmed, “A present from a friend.”

“And with that sword you say you can slay the gods?”  Spartan asked in disbelief.

“This sword was created by God himself, to be used to bring right where wrong has been brought and to destroy evil!”   Zendra explained to him.  “Without Teiresias, Zeus and others will not have someone to turn to when it comes to seeing into the future.”

“How do you plan on facing him?”  Blacksmith asked.

“Or better yet how will you find him?”  Dingo asked her.

“The Sword will show me, and as far as facing him, I shall do it alone.”  Zendra told them.

“What about the rest of us?”  Gill-Girl then asked.

“The rest of you will be a diversion, no doubt that shouldn’t be a problem with you.”  Zendra said with a smile.

“I think we can arrange that.”  Spartan agreed.

“Excellent we leave in an hour.”  Zendra told them.

Chapter 9

The Continentals sans Zendra was waiting for her signal to move. Blacksmith was in his War Hammer Armor and was hiding in one of the wagons that Spartan was leading.  Spartan was given command of the team as well as some of the people from the caves that volunteered to help in their fight.  As they drew closer to the Army of Aries’ camp they prepared themselves for whatever was to come.

Aries overlooked the town and saw a group of people heading his direction.  As he peered closer they looked like servants bringing in the wagons of food for him and his troops.  He motioned for the gates to be open, and the people came in with the wagons.  Once the gates had shut Aries approached them.  “How nice of you to bring your tribute early, this pleases me!”

“I am glad that we have found favor in your eyes, please accept out tribute…ATTACK!”  Spartan cried with a loud voice and the blankets that covered the wagons came off and people filed out attacking Aries and his army!

“You will pay for this trickery!  May I know your name mortal so that I shall be remembered of all times to tell the story of one who defied the gods and died!”

“My name is Spartan and I am no ordinary mortal!”  He announced himself as he placed his right fist into Aries jaw and knocked the god through the gates and into the town.  “Warhammer send the signal!”  Warhammer acknowledged as he raised his arm and fired a signal flare!

Zendra saw that flare, and she turned on her jet pack with The Sword of Power in hand to guide her to her target.  It led her to a cave near the castle that sat upon Mt. Olympus.  She landed inside and walked through the cave until she saw a man sitting on the floor looking at her as if he saw her.  “Welcome Zendra niece of Ruthers of Russia.”  He greeted her, “I know why you have come.”

“At least I don’t have to tell you my intentions at least.”  She said placing the sword in a ready position.

“Before you kill me, there is something I believe you should know.”  He told her.

“And what is that?”

“There are more of us and Zeus wants them freed.”

“Why are you telling me this?”

“Because unlike the others I have no reason to carry on.  Zeus had asked me if he would succeed in freeing the others and I said yes, but I didn’t tell him that I would be killed by your hand.”

“You’re speaking in riddles, what others?  Why don’t you want to carry on?”  She questioned him.

“Not all of the gods or creatures were freed from The Abyss.”  Teiresias began to explain, “Only those of whom we now possess the bodies of were of us who were able to return.  There are still those of whom still await to be freed, they only needed to be given a new body.  And to answer why I don’t want to carry on, is I have fulfilled my purpose.”

“Is there anything else that you can tell me?”

“Yes, make my death a swift one.”

She nodded in agreement and took hold of the sword and with one swing decapitated him.  There was a red glow and dark form appeared, “Thank you.”  It said as it returned to The Abyss.  Zendra activated the jet pack again after she exited the cave.  Moments later as she flew over the city she sent a signal flare signifying that her mission was over.  Spartan saw the signal and he whistled loud to tell the others to retreat.

“Where are you going?”  Aries asked him.

Spartan looked upon the false gods’ bruised face and said, “I think you’ve taking enough of a beating for the day.”  He smiled and left.

“Come back here you coward!  Come back and fight me!”  Ares called out and as he did he saw a lightning flash showing that his presence was needed.

Chapter 10

Zeus gathered the rest of the gods together to tell them of the news that their prophet was dead.  “Can you bring him back?”  Zeus asked Hades.

“Yes I could, however it would appear that he does not wish to return.”  Hades answered.

“He was always such a coward.”  Aries commented.

“It doesn’t matter within the coming days the rest of our brothers and sisters shall be brought forth from The Abyss and we shall once again rule Greece with a godly fist!”  Zeus declared and others cheered in agreement.

Zendra and the others celebrated their victory over the gods.  “This is a nice party, I could get used to this.”  Kopy-Kat commented

“This was only a battle, but there is still a war to win.”  Zendra told them.

“True, but with each victory will equal one less villain to defeat.”  Blacksmith reminded her.

“I know my friend.  However, I still feel as if there was something else he could’ve told me.”

“I wouldn’t sweat too much about it.” Spartan told her, “Besides I had a great time bruising Ares’ face.”  And then pointed to his own bruised face.

“So it would appear.”  She laughed.

“Now shall I have this dance?”  Spartan asked her.  She nodded and they went dancing around joining the rest of the people in celebration.

From afar Dark-Rider looked upon them, he was glad that they were blowing off steam, “This is only beginning my friends, and I hope I will be there to see you finish it.”

I like your dialogue, as the story went on, it got progressively better and more realistic. To complement your dialogue, may I suggest that you try to avoid stating, repetitively "said", "asked", "responded", etc., and instead using the words in your dialogue to identify the action of the speaker. If it's a question, we, as readers, know the character is asking it. Likewise, if the character is answering a question, we know. Think about adding character action and tone to the dialogue's following.

An example: "This was only a battle, but there is still a war to win." Zendra's thoughts were overwhelming. There was so much planning and training left to do.

Other than that, I love the way you started your story in the middle of the action, instead of at the beginning with Zendra's birth, or some such. Finally, the story does sound trite - similar to many others of the same genre - but, don't let that stop you. FInd a small way to make yours unique.

Perhaps, let the villains win...
