Lessons in Fear

Lessons in Fear

A Poem by Geralyn Miller

She is a twenty year old,

on the cusp between girl and woman.

Today,

she discovered,

up close and personal,

that the world is a scary place.

A simple lunch with a friend,

to see the new baby

became a lesson in terror.

An armed criminal,

pursued by US Marshalls,

ran into the crowded restaurant.

Too many people,

he ordered most out at gunpoint.

 Whisked by police

into surrounding businesses,

forced to spend hours waiting,

fearful every moment.

Captives,

until the criminal surrendered;

and they could go home.

She is a twenty year old,

she will never be a child again.

its frightening and we are lucky in the US to not see it front and center like the rest of the world....sorry your niece had to be shaken out of the utopia and safety we sometimes take for granted.
