Unsurvivor

A Poem by Geralyn Miller

     Supine in the bed,

mind lost in fear memory,

      She is unaware.

      Never a response

or reaction to the world.

      Trapped in his hell.

     She doesn't know he's dead,

though we tell her, she doesn't hear.

     He lost, but he won.

Author's Note

Geralyn Miller
Her name was Elizabeth, her husband beat her badly, tied her up and made her watch while he strangled their eight month old to death. His seven year old daughter called the police after he left. she is the one who told the police what happened, because Elizabeth never spoke another word, she just laid, eyes open unless sedated, with a look of horror in her eyes that would terrify you. He chose to shoot it out with the cops, he lost. Elizabeth never spoke, she lived 28 months, then died in her sleep, 26 years old.

Horrible.
The piece itself was powerful and poignant, especially the last stanza- but the story behind it- simply horrible.

I always read the author's notes first. So my eyes were already tearing up before I read the piece. How horrible. My mind goes to the child and what came/will come of her.
