Paternity

Paternity

A Poem by Geralyn Miller

poor creature,

happy-unhappy man.

he loves her whom he can not have;

all his strength to possess this sweet monster.

         she loves another,

         her heart is held by a tiny hand,

he cannot hate.

for he loves her small captor, too.

he loves inexplicable, impossible woman,

         alien angel . . .

         slave in a world

         of cribs, coverlets and pap.

i don't know the story behind this, but the words of the poem are strong and it does pull the reader along with the simplest of words. a child in the center and having been through all of the turmoil of similar life experiences i can understand this very well.
