At my door

At my door

Scots dialect humorous poem

At my door

Upon a midnight, dreich and dreary,
came a stranger, wet and weary
knock, knock, knocking
at my door

Knock, knock, knocking
at my door
Knocking, knocking
at my door

Aknock, knock knocking
knocking, knocking,
knocking, knocking
at my door

Knocking, knocking
always knocking
(this goes on a bit)
at my door

Knocking, knocking
forever knocking
knock, knock, knocking
at my door

Knocking, knocking
and still more knocking
knock, knock knocking
at my knockered door

So I lifted from my pose recumbent
upon a bed close to redundant
and slowly opened up my door

There stood the stranger wet and weary
so I raised both eyebrows as if in  query
“Right, ya bastart,” which was’ny cheery

“Ahm, no peyin ye a penny fer whit ye did tae ma flair.”

Then she stopped for a mo and looked through her hair

“Wait a wee meenit; you’re no Shuggy Gilmore.”

“Naah,” I said tiredly, “he’s ma neebor next door.”

Author's Note

GeorgeE
This was inspired by the wonderful Scots comedian Billy Connolly. It also has a faint, nodding homage to The Raven by A E Poe. And for anyone patient enough to read to the end; hope you like it.
Um... one of my friends said it seems better when recited out loud. Try it and see.

Hi Samuel Dickens
Thanks for the review. I sincerely agree about the imitation part - but I did enjoy it.
I have now read some of your short stories. Wow! You are good. I particularly liked the straying into fantasy bits.
Read Wind Apples, Oracle, Sailor Man and some of the others and very much enjoyed Oracle.
Wind Apples reminds me of my own foray into thieving a neighbour's apples when I was about 11 years old. I got really bad stomach ache - which I suppose serves me right. What's worse, I did it twice.

What's that they say about imitation? The sincerest form of flattery, yes indeed. If Poe wouldn't like this, I certainly do. (The solemn-faced guy probably laughed SOMETIMES) Though not familiar with Billy Connolly, I think I get his brand of humour.
